Default Organized t206 info in the American Tobacco Journal

This information is from an American Tobacco journal that as best as I can tell surfaced in the late 90's to early 2000's.

Like most journal's/ledger's it looks like everything is in the order it was documented and they went back and updated some of the pages when changes occurred.

along with other pages all of the pages that had actual t206 cards pasted to them were removed and some of the packing and shipping info on those pages were lost.

But the two index pages are in the journal.

Here's the two index pages
img399.jpg

img400.jpg

The first page in the journal that pertains to t206's is this Sweet Caporal page unfortunately the top left that contains packing and shipping instructions is missing.
img469.jpg

In part it reads... in the top left you can see all the 1909's for the year and the second one down you can see 5th I think it's a shipping date and is probably March 5th.

Next it says 1 ball and fish picture each again part of the dates are missing the top part says began packing 4/2?, 4/? shipping 4/2? ad. discontinued packing fish 8/29/10 continue to pack 1 ball picture.

At the bottom it reads in part packing 5/5/10 cabinet size ball player picture to each carton.

The next page is this Sovereign page.
img470.jpg

the top of this page is missing too.
the first readable part says shipping 4/23, 1910 1 one fish & ball picture to each box 10 1 cabinet to each 500 carton I can't read the next part but after
it says all over with except state of O. changed to 30 days packing. also prize fighter ? 6/6 - 6/13. discontinued packing fish card 8/29/10 continue packing one baseball picture.

Old Mill
img471.jpg

This page reads... began packing Aug. 7/09 shipping Aug. 7/09 Began packing nat'l player same as those in piedmont Jan 8th 1910 shipping Jan. 9th 1910 began packing one nat'l & 1 So. 1/2 time Began packing 3/15/1910 shipping 3/17 1910 discontiued 12/14/10. the bottom goes on to say cabinet size ball pictures to each carton began packing & shipping 5/6/1910 ect... all states except Ohio.

Piedmont/Old Mill
img472.jpg
There is a lot of info in these but from here on I'm only going to reference
the t206 material.

The top of the page is missing and although it's a Piedmont page what can be read is about Old Mills.

at the bottom it say's to pack till exhausted Old Mill so league players 10%
Old Mill nat'l players 90% until Old Mill stock is exhausted. discontinue packing fish cards 8/24/10 continue packing 1 ball picture.

Carolina Brights
img473.jpg

This page is interesting because it's not really a page for t206's but I think
someone made a mistake crossed it out and entered it on the correct page
but that info was lost when the Carolina page with the T206 was removed
and cut down.

on the side crossed out it reads Began packing ball picture Piedmont back backs in Carolina Brights 12/8 or 18/09 began packing 2 ball pictures with C.B. backs.

Page 71
img474.jpg
This is another interesting page because the Index has it as a Carolina Brights but I think it was for Sweet Caporal and the piece missing in the top
left might have had a t206 Sweet Caporal pasted to it. What is on it reads Began packing 2 pictures in 1 box 10 2/14/10 shipping 2/16/10

near the bottom it reads Fez cig Phila territory 12/8/09 discontinued Sweet Cap ball picture.

Page 75 Lenox
img475.jpg

1 picture to each package
began packing and shipping 3/16/1910
2 pictures to each package began packing 4/9/1910 shipping 4/12/1910
discontinued military 10/14/10 also began packing baseball picture Oct. 15/10 1 to each box of 10

Page 78
img476.jpg

Discontinue packing military picture when supply is exhausted also to pack 1 prizefighter & one baseball player.

Page 89
img477.jpg

6/16/1910 began packing/shipping for 60 days 1 each ball player & prizefighter each state of Ohio only discontinued 9/13/10

Page 91 Tolstoi
img478.jpg

6/16/1910 began packing and shipping 1 each ball player and prizefighter Ohio only.

Tolstoi Discontinued

Great thread, would be nice to track down the old Mastro Catalogue for these and get higher resolution scans.

"At the bottom it reads in part packing 5/5/10 cabinet size ball player picture to each carton."

What is the cabinet sized card in Sweet Caporal and Sovereign? Were they T3's without the redemption backs?

I don't think they were T3's they had their own page in the journal but you had to mail in coupons for them so it could have been that some were inserted in cartons.

It mentions cabinets on a few pages I don't know that much about the cabinets but I thought in the Old Mill ads it could be H801-7's.

I agree that the "cabinet" reference is related to the packaging of the picture T3/T9 redemption coupon.

A supporting pic from Craig Diamond's T3 site. Also, a picture of the coupon backside.

As I understand it, the T3/T9 coupons were inserted in packs, for smokers to save and redeem. The Ledger refers to cabinets being in 500 count cartons (and it does so on other non-T206 pages, to cabinets that don't seem to correspond to any known set). I don't think this is a reference to the T3/T9 coupons as a result, they weren't in Sweet Cap or Sovereign as far as we know, and they would have been in normal packs, not 1 per 500 count carton. If they were a carton release like this, one had to smoke a fantastic number of cigarettes from brand's not mentioned on the cards or the coupons to get just one Turkey Red. There are no Sovereign prize fighter cards that this page references either.

T3 were issued with a tougher "No Redemption Back" variation where all mention of coupons and tobacco brands is absent. I think the cabinets mentioned could have been T3's intended for display or promotion at retailers given the larger 500 count box insertion? Maybe that was an initial limited release of them, followed by the coupon redemption for certain brands. Many of the poses are the same used in T206, in a way they are like "deluxe" T206's. Just a theory...

A large portion of the ledger with all of the non sports pages is available on the non sports site. I think something like 65 pages are depicted:

Some of the pages in the journal mention the Philadelphia territory.
ATC Phila.jpg

I found a long article in a August 17 1909 Raleigh Observer newspaper that covered 3 pages here are a few clippings from that article. It could have something to do with the separation of the Philadelphia distribution or not either way I found it interesting.

Incredible - thanks for the work and for posting. I see Broadleaf in the index - are there any remnants of those pages?

Hey Bryan, Broad Leaf is one of the T206 pages missing that there is no image of.
