Default T206 Matty's mystery.....missing backs.....where are they ?

The Mathewson (dark cap) is one of the Six Super Prints in the T206 set. Yet, 4 of the rare backs....BROAD LEAF 350....DRUM....LENOX....red HINDU
are unconfirmed with Matty. While the other five Super Prints are confirmed with either three, or four (including BL 460) of these tougher backs.

Furthermore, Matty's 1910 COUPON card is very difficult to find. Only one is listed in PSA's pop report. I don't have SGC's pop report (1910 COUPON)
data on Matty. Besides my SGC graded Matty (displayed here), I know of only one other Matty with this back. I would appreciate it, if any one on this
forum can vouch for any more 1910 COUPON Matty's.

Also, another Matty "toughie" is his SOVEREIGN 460 card.

I'd appreciate it if you gung-ho T206 collectors would chime in here with any information regarding Matty's missing BROAD LEAF 350, DRUM, LENOX,
red HINDU backs. I've been searching for these Matty cards for 36 years. I'm usually an optimist, therefore I expect they'll eventually be discovered.

Here's number 3. I believe a 2 is the highest grade.

Ted, I can’t add to the Matty query. But I have almost completed the Evers yellow sky (missing only the Drum), including BL 350 (not too tough), BL 460 (I think only two known), and RH (I have not seen another but I am sure they exist). In putting together the run, series 460 backs were definitely some of the toughest, especially the Sov 460 and Pied fact 42. Below are pics of the BL 460, the RH, and the Sov 460.

Great cards Sonny and Dean.

Here's the card I have toward the set. Still need a Rhoades.

Best I can see, The MET has a raw one from Burdick. PSA has an AUTH on their pop, SGC has this AUT, you guys 3 2's and a 1.5. Beckett shows none on their pop.

Thanks guys for your responses regarding the 6 cards of Mathewson with the 1910 COUPON backs.

Let us keep this "Matty train" running. I find it quite interesting that one of the more popular T206
subjects is missing some significant Tobacco backs.

Pretty cool we have 4 out of the 5 Type 1 Matty's here on the board.

Love your Evers run Ryan. Next to the Dark cap Matty, one of my favorite poses.

Great stuff guys.

Ted, just my humble and around here worthless opinion, that dark cap t206 is Matty's best looking card out of any set of cards featuring him. Forget the t205 or any others anyone would care to mention, that is it. Simply gorgeous!

Default the days of 'finding' a Mathewson are long over

To 'find' a card today is not the same as finding a Red Hindu in the days when ebay first started, or trading with the old Full Count BBC board members (what a bunch of characters!) , or trading into my circle of collectors in texas and arizona. Ive had, or seen many Red Hindus from those days. Grading was a new thing, The Evers red Hindu was ungraded in my collection.

You could get Red Hindu's for a decent price. Some $500 apiece, then they went up according to HOF or rarity, and there was a lot of hard trading that went on as no one wanted to trade more than 1 , and it had to be for something rare they wanted. The collectors could bypass the dealers back then to some degree.

Explain to me how you are going to buy a Mathewson Red Hindu now? the days of 'collector to collector sale' where you work a reasonable private sale for that kind of card with your collecting circle are long dead.

Someone will insist on getting it graded , at which point dealers will get involved and then suggest it go to auction to realize best price, now cutting out the collectors , so only the top card sharks even have access to bid.

Now assuming that didnt happen , and the Mathewson Red Hindu falls into your hands at an estate sale, or a widow, or young kid who doesnt know any better, you wouldnt feel very good in you own conscience! finding this in an estate sale for next to nothing and not telling them you know the card is worth a fortune. I cant do that.

In either case I wouldnt want pay the dealers top dollar for this card, and I also would never feel right finding this card for cheap, and even though its a top card for me to find , the days to get it are over.
Maybe it's best not found! lol

Default T206 Matty's mystery.....missing backs.....where are they ?

Illustrated are the SIX SUPER PRINTS for those of you new to the T206 game. American Lithographic initially printed these 6 subjects with SOVEREIGN 350 backs ("apple-
green" ink). And, subsequently printed them with the SOVEREIGN 460 backs. The SOVEREIGN 460 cards are considerably tougher to find than the SOVEREIGN 350 cards.

.

Note......Scot Reader deserves all the credit for his excellent research regarding the significance of these six T206 subjects.

Hey John

CAROLINA BRIGHTS....."It don't come easy".....as Ringo Starr would say (or sing).

Matty with a CAROLINA BRIGHTS back is tough, but not in the same class as the tough backs mentioned above.

Interestingly, the PIEDMONT 460 Factory #42 POP report (PSA & SGC) data on 5 of the Six Super Prints ranges from 6 to 10 examples each.

Currently, Matty's data is 8 examples.

Not surprisingly, the red Cobb's data is as high as 20 examples. Which is typical, due to the usual Pop Report super star "redundancy factor".

I don’t collect backs, but I do collect signatures — in this case Mrs. Jane Mathewson, from the collection of Jeff Morey.

Part of my 'First Five' prewar pickup cards, and if/when I have to get rid of all my cards except one, this Matty would make the cut.

Edited to provide two bigger scans of the front, which replicates what my mind perceives as being most important when it comes to vintage, especially T206 cards.
