1910's Jack Sutthoff cafe- bartender card
This is a neat little premium/business card I picked up not too long ago from another board member. SABR (which I just joined) has a nice write up on Jack. It seems he got out of organized baseball in 1909 and went into the bar business. If you have a few minutes the little write up is fairly interesting; for those that like baseball history and nostalgia. I wouldn't mind seeing some other premium/business cards if anyone wants to show any? regards

booze
As a liquor store owner I can greatly appreciate the sentiment on the back of the card. I may have to appropriate that poem for my own business card while giving credit to the poet. That was Coleridge right??

Interesting, not only was he a saloon owner, but a successful one. Then to be shut down by prohibition. It kinda makes the poem cut a little deeper.
Thanks for sharing Jantz |

It's always fun to read more about the individuals on our cards. Makes them come to life.

not sure
I am not sure who the author of the poem was. You are welcome to appropriate it. I don't think anyone will mind and if you find who wrote it you can give them credit. I am sure they would have appreciated it.

Here's Harry Coveleskie's Giant Killer Cafe in Shamokin, PA. I pass within a mile or two of Shamokin every time I'm in Pennsylvania and have stopped in once. They have a plaque in the middle of town to honor Stanley, who spent a lot of his life living in South Bend, Indiana. There is nothing mentioning his brother Harry, who never left the area. Too bad.

Great Move on Joining SABR

I know you are not going to be super active -- but there are several committees you will enjoy (Black Sox, Deadball and 19th Century) -- all of which will add even more to your appreciation of these cards |

Ohio I think
Sutthoff played mostly for Cincinnati later in his career. That is where he opened the bar too (obviously). My guess is the uniform is from that city ALTHOUGH he did end his career in Philadelphia in 1905.

I would love to believe that but if I recall that is the "P" on a 1905 Phillies uniform that is peaking in the picture. If someone has a better picture or more information that it is not a Phillie...I would love to see it.

It can't be a Red's uniform. It very well can be a Phillies uniform.
