FYI....1910 COUPON checklist (T213-1)

The 68 cards in the 1910 COUPON set are derived from an early press run (Spring 1910) of the 350 series of the T206 set. American Lithographic printed these cards
on thinner cardboard stock than the regular T206 cards, because these cards were not intended to serve as cigarette pack STIFFINERS. This brand was introduced to
the market packaged in cartons labelled "COUPON" that contained approx. 100 cigarettes. A standard 10-cigarette pack labelled "COUPON" has never been found.
In my opinion, it does not exist.
All 68 subjects are identical in every respect to their T206 "cousins". These cards were issued in the Spring/Summer of 1910. Note the similarity in the stylistic design
of the backs of these T206 advertisements and this COUPON advertisement......

At the risk of asking a series of stupid questions, but in the interest of having this thread survive a little longer....

a.) Is this the confirmed list or the 'theorized' list?

b.) Has anyone [that we know of] completed this set?

c.) How closely does this checklist reflect the T215-1 checklist?

This list of 68 cards is COMPLETE, and have been confirmed.


(b).....

My understanding is that there is one complete 1910 COUPON set. Perhaps, someone else here can vouch for more complete sets.


(c).....
The RED CROSS (T215-1) set consists of 96 cards. It is comprised of T206 subjects from the 350 series, 350-460 series, and 460-only series.
And the Matty (white cap) from the 150/350 series. These cards were most likely issued in two series of 48 cards each. The 1st series in 1910
and the 2nd series in 1912.

Good information Ted. Over time some of our gems remain very scarce, while others seem to come out of the woodwork more often. The T213-1 (or T206 Coupon ) series are still among the least seen cards. I always take a 2nd look when I see one, they are so scarce. Actually, I was surprised when this Cobby (shown a few times before) didn't garner more attention on ebay. I would imagine their scarcity is due to their paper thin stock and their limited distribution. Nice information and thanks for posting. regards

Thanks for posting this list. I noticed that there are no Boston American cards in the T213 Coupon set. Is the same true for the T215 Red Cross? What about the similar Pirate set?

Leon - You are right... Time marches on but you don't see Type 1's come around hardly at all. I was able to pick up this little raw beauty last month and when you say they are thin, you just can't realize how thin until you hold it in your hand. As thin as a piece of paper, which I think is amazing in itself, that any survived in decent condition. We have discussed before that a Vg-Ex still remains the highest condition card known, which I am still hopefull one day a pack fresh coupon will be found that was stuck in a book right after the first smoke was lit! Could be the only Type 1 anomoly in condition out there... My hope remains, just see what a card like that would look like... Perhaps, the gent that owns a whole set might have one in better shape than vg-ex !? I have been collecting the 1's for 10 years and maybe 1 or 2 Southern Leaguer's come up for sale a year, so I think these rascals are forgotten, and pushed aside due to how hard it would be to piece a set or sub-set together....

We have an archive section it should go in. Lets see if there is anymore good info that can come out and then I might ask Brian to put it over there.....I will make sure there isn't a better T213-1 thread first, also. The Archive section has a little icon at the far right of the screen (as you are viewing) and has some very good threads over there already.

I am on the last stages of the long project of getting the new board rules up too. I am trying to cover everything and want them to be explicit. As previously stated, there won't be any changes in how the board is being ran (good or bad, I guess) but the new rules will be more explicit, so they should help. regards

I have just 12 of these rare cards........additional to the 6 super-prints in the 1st post here are the following. But, I have no expectations
of ever completing this set.

Furthermore, I know of only one member of Net54 that has a near complete set, or perhaps he has completed this set. I'm curoius, does
any one on this forum know of any completed 1910 COUPON sets ?

Such a cool issue. I wish I had some insightful information but unfortunately I don't. Has there ever been a large find of T213-1 before? I know there was a find of T213-2 and 3's (Hi Bob ) but the thin paper, weather conditions and past hurricanes have most likely wiped them out.

Nope, never heard of a large find of T213-1s. A few years back there were 1-2 groups of them, if I recall there might have been 20+ in each group, but my memory is fading. I do remember a few groups though as I had bought and resold quite a few of them. For the record I still don't consider the type 1s to be part of T206. It's not like we can go back and change time. If there were a wholesale update to the ACC maybe I would consider the change. But otherwise, Burdick knew exactly what he was doing with these, and to me they are what he said they are. (just my opinion)

Pictured here are the Major Leaguer's (48) in this set. Most likely that these were derived from an early press run of the 350 series cards
of the T206 set. American Lithographic (ALC) printed these 48 subjects from a set of existing printing plates used to produce their regular
press run of this group of 350 series T206's.

I have configured these 48 subjects in a 12 x 4 format....since my research indicates that ALC printed their T206 sheets in Columns of 12.
I have arranged them essentially by color sequencing. Therefore, any resemblance to an actual layout of these cards would be quite coin-
cidental.

Furthermore, given that the standard size sheets of that era were 19" x 24", there is a good probability that these subjects were Double-
Printed, resulting in a 96-card sheet.

In the 150 series press runs, American Lithographic (ALC) printed 34 different Southern Leaguers (SL).....16 of which represent the Southern Association.
In the 350 series press runs of the T206's, ALC expanded the SL sub-set to 48 subjects.....20 of which represent the Southern Association. The four ad-
ditional Southern Association subjects are Bill Hart, "Hub" Hart, Lentz & Rockenfeld. This is important, as it clearly sets a Spring/Summer 1910 timeline
for the T213-1 cards. This timeline is further reinforced by several other factors....which I will save for another day.
