1889 Studio Cabinet Cy Young?

I've been searching for a pic of an 1890 Rogers Studio Cabinet of Cy, but with no success. I did stumble upon this auction, but can't find any verification of the year/make of the card. Any help would be great. Bill.

Yes, Ryder & Rogers are two different ones. I don't think that you can date it to 1889 though.

Phil, have you ever come across any reference to the date on the Rogers? I have no problem with the Ryder, I just can't find any info on the Rogers, just that one auction. Thanks, Bill.

Nothing other than the fact that Young looks to be a similar age in both.

I would say that c1890-92 would be most accurate.

As I looked at these cabinets, I realized that for many of the players shown in the link of the OP, I wouldn't even have known they were baseball players. It makes me wonder if I've passed up cabinets of famous players at antique stores because there is no identification on the photo.

I can't imagine why anyone would think it's a good idea to auction 88 quality cabinets in a single lot. That's got to be the dumbest auction I've ever seen.

I really like the Perrier Cabinet. I hope to one day ad a photo of a cal league player, in uniform, to my collection. I haven't seen much available, but there is a cool collection out there that can be seen in this Antiques Roadshow archive.

The first photo is a front/back which I believe is the same date as the Young(Note no Dennison).

The second photo is a front/back which includes the Dennison location. I believe this is post the Young photo.

The third photo is a front/back without the Dennison location but with a copyright of 1889. This is not the same type Cabinet of Young, but maybe it was taken after the Young cabinet?

Any help with the Dennison date would be of huge help. If I could nail that date down (I believe it's 1890) I might be able to lean towards an 1889 Young thanks, Bill.

I've still been researching this with the help of a couple of people familiar with 1800's cabinet photography. One is leaning toward 1889, the other 1890. For now I will stay with 1890-92 until I can have hard proof of the earlier date. If anyone can point me in another direction, it would be appreciated.

Are you sure the Rogers cabinet is Cy Young? I wouldn't be positive on that. It looks like him but the ears and nose are somewhat different. Here is an early 1891 image for comparison:

I think there is little doubt the Rogers is Cy Young, but he does appear to be younger on it than the Ryder or the cabinet card of 1891

Scott--unless his right ear is radically different than his left ear I have to disagree. In my mind there is some doubt. I would love to have Mark Fimoff chime in.

At first glace, I just assumed it was Cy Young on the Rogers cabinet card. As I look at the card more closely, I would have to agree with Jay. The right ear is really different from his left ear in the other photos.

Here he is on the Just So card, facing towards the left. His right ear still seems different than the Rogers cabinet.

Here's another pic of Young from 1899 facing the same way as the Just So & Rogers, much older and heavier as his face is much more round. In my opinion, the difference in shape of his ear which appears to stick out more on the Rogers photo is due to a slight difference in angle (maybe 10 degrees or so) turned more to his right. Every other facial feature including lips, eyebrows, nose, cleft of chin, inner-ear, etc. appears to be identical. In summary, I think the Rogers does picture Young.

Phil--good comparison picture. The only difference I see now is that in the Just So his nose is rounded at the end and the bridge is not entirely straight any more. However, that could be explained by a punch or a mistimed baseball.
