Default Wrap your "Brain" around this

I know auction results can be truly baffling, and based on whim or needs of a single fanatic, but this one really has me stumped. Just two weeks ago I won at eBay a t206 card for Dave Brain--minor leaguer, SGC 4.5, EPDG. At $190, I thought good buy, even though a ML, because great centering and always loved the image and color. No big deal. It was tops in grade at SGC, I think one higher at PSA, and as we know tops at SGC doesn't count nearly as much right now.

Lo and behold same card comes up at Goodwin last night in an SGC 4. And goes for $618! The pop report clearly shows one 4 and one 4.5, no surprises there. So: What gives? Am I missing something? Or lucky? Or just one of those whims which will end up meaningless.

apparently some people don't buy cards on ebay...they only deal with some of the auction houses...like Goodwin. This...and/or general craziness could account for this!!!!!

Goodwin hype multiplier.

Nice score on the 4.5.

Thanks, but Goodwin didn't hype pop reports much at all this time around (and certainly not with that card). Occasionally they did but I saw numerous places, without much looking, where they could have hyped more. And they had dozens and dozens of mid-grade semi-rare backs this time, this Brain was just in the mix, and barely.

For some reason or another people just can't help themselves when it comes to Goodwin and REA. It's like something goes off in their brain that they must overbid and overpay for cards with those two AHs. Works great if you're the consignor

As Chris said above, it's very much the hype factor with Goodwin and REA.

Default Hunt

I think it's the hype from the "Hunt Auctions" Brain, some renewed Brain Love !!

Could be true, but how does "hype" explain why only some cards--such as the Brain--affected and not most others, particularly when Goodwin didn't draw attention to this card in the least? Seemingly more valuable cards all around it went for half the price.

How does one explain 33K for a boston store Joe Jackson...as compared to 6K for a uber rare green joyce backed m101-4/5.

You just can't!!!!

Personally I thought the Jackson was bit high but not when looking at historical sales. The Green Joyce Jackson is certainly more rare but it's a back variation and not the "whole" card...

I like the E125 Jackson image better than the M101-4/5. I think many would agree that most players are worth more as an E135 than M101-4/5, except when speaking of Ruth due to the "rookie" factor. I personally like the E135 Ruth far more than the little M101-4/5.

I agree with you Pete. That Green-Joyce went cheap--barely half the price of an Indy Brewing JoeJax just one grade higher that sold in Goodwin four months ago. Maybe the fact that it was miscut and had a noticeable blemish kept it down but still it is a true scarcity.

The E135s and their ilk are harder to find than the m101-4s and m101-5s, which is a major reason they draw more cash. It's all a matter of preference of course, but I believe those "little" m101-4s and m101-5s have far better picture quality overall than the often grainy, washed out look of the E135s and its brethren, which also have far more bland poses for the most part.

Todd, I wasn't putting down the the M101-4/5 series with my "little" comment as I really like those cards, they are simply smaller. I used to collect the M101's and had a few hundred of them before i shifted to other interests. If given a choice I'd probably choose a Collins-McCarthy/Boston Store as I actually prefer those images, the action shots of M101-4/5 are great but I find the E135 images somewhat unique and the cards tend to be tougher to find when taking the front image into account (irregardless if the card has a tough back or not).

Default Goodwin

I know the Green Joyce Jackson is rare, but I think the lower price had a lot to do with the card being miscut. Just my opinion, but I feel most collectors like nice "eye appeal" on the front, and that card just didn't do it for me.

As for the Boston Store Joe Jackson, it ended at the price I figured it would've. There are only 10 examples, and this is one of the nicest one's out there. They don't come up for auction all that often, and image of Jackson on the front is unique and intriguing - in my eye.
