I'm curious about this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=57993&item=5177445402&rd=1

Why such a high final price? David sold a handful or two of other 84s that sold for about 1/3 or less, and frankly, that Veach is a weak 7, IMO. Is it scarce, or what am I missing?

It could be one of those cases of two people bidding a crazy price on an item, thinking that it would guarantee a win. I have never heard anything about Veach being any scarcer than the others.

It's just that Vendomecat (which I believe is a cajun word meaning "Hal Lewis") won, and my experience in watching him devour pretty much anything I want is that he swoops down and grabs bunches of high grade stuff at once--he virtually never loses. Here, there were many others in the same or better shape that he completely passed on--in fact, he only bid on (and of course won) an SGC 60 Turner. I was lucky to win a couple, and a few with marginal centering did not even meet a fairly modest reserve. I haven't checked the pop reports, but it seems unlikely he already has all of these. Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that some table scraps were left for the rest of us, but again, this Veach of all things makes me wonder.

Looking back at all the Boston Stores that David put up, I'm surprised at how many didn't even get a bid, let alone meet the reserve (which I agree wasn't all that high considering the grades).

Sometimes an EBay item comes along that defies logic - the set I am most avidly pursuing right now is BF2, and about a month ago there was an Eddie Collins for auction with creases in the picture, needle marks all along the edges, and a chip out of the corner of the picture that sold for $330. I couldn't believe it, since there was one in about EX-MT that sold for $110 a while back. Collins is of average scarcity so I have no idea why someone would pay so much for one in poor condition, but it happened.

Maybe someone else that is more of a Boston Store expert than myself can provide some information on the Veach?

I have a Detroit checklist book that was printed in 1983 that list Detroit player cards for sets 1901 thru 1983. The author idicates scarcer(more expensive) cards with ($), ($$) or ($$$). With the Boston Stores none are listed as scarce. That could be wrong, don't know.

Boston Stores are a GREAT set to collect and the secret is out on them. Where else can you get Joe Jackson/Babe Ruth/Ty Cobb and many other HOFers in one set during their early years? Vendomecat is not Hal, even though when he bids he normally wins. All that happend on the Veach was two people needed it and I can tell you that one person ended up with sticker shock! Here is a link to another Boston Store card that went to cheap... It all averages out... PS, I only need 8 more common players to complete my set and I will pay way over book to coplete it! JC

Jim,
I'm having that same feeling as I get close to completing BF2...the closer I get, the more willing I am to pay way over book for a common player that I might need...who knows when the same one might come up for sale? With some of the sets from the 1910's and 20's you have to take what you can get when it is for sale and hope to upgrade later if you need to.

Good luck with your Boston Store set...that is a heck of an achievement to be so close.

Greg
