i know the t205 joss is one of the most difficult cards in the set to find.all i know about it is it was printed after his death.what's the source of the scarcity and what prices would one expect to pay in varying grades?how often do they seem to appear in auctions?any pics to post?

thanks,

There must be about a hundred floating around this board! The face is great, and though it's a memorial card, it was put out only shortly after he died, and the back carries a tribute such as might have been read at his funeral. Just keep your eyes open on eBay--or at the National--you'll find one. Pricey!

...best I could afford!

I disagree a little bit with Julie on this one. This card was printed in a later series. There were at least 4 different printings of T205 cards and Joss was in one of the latter printings. To date, I have only seen Joss with two different back ads-- Piedmont 25 and Cycle. I have not confirmed it but I feel that it possibly comes with American Beauty backs as well.

The Joss was printed after April 14th, 1911 (the date of his passing).

I do think that the popularity is what is driving the scarcity. It is found with the Piedmont 25 back, the most common back. That does not mean though that the Piedmont 25 back was not printed more than once and he could have been replaced. I do think that it is as scarce as some of the other like Vaughn, Ford white cap, and Sweeney.

I think that Wagner, Karger, Wilhelm (both versions), Wallace no cap (both versions), and a few others are tougher to find.

Julie is correct, keep an eye on ebay and the national is sure to have a few.

Mine is about the same condition as Julie's but I do not have a current scan. Speaking of that...Julie, what about the back?

Joshua

PS Reminds me that I have to start collating my data for my t205 back report.

I didn't know that. O.K. I'll scan the back...as far as I can see, we agree that it's mainly the demand that drives the scarcity, and that it was put out after his death, but not long after.

Back with back scan in a few minutes.

Here it is. I have a slightly smaller one for my website, but this is easier to read.

Is it a Hassan 30 as well...that would make sense to me since many of the scarce t205s seem to come with that back as well. This really helps...players like Suggs, Turner, Raymond, etc. all come with Cycle, Hassan 30, and Piedmont 25.

Okay...not as scarce as some but still popular...

Joshua

The card had to be produced after April 17th which was the day of his funeral which was mentioned on the back of the card...Billy Sunday presided over the service which was attended by over 10,000 people. A great book on Joss is "Addie Joss, King of the Pitchers" by Scott Longert and can probably had through the SABR bookstore.

Edited for spelling and grammar (I know why I teach 1st grade---because I can not spell 2nd grade words!)

I thought it was so utterly classless of Topps not to put out tribute cards to Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson in 1974 and 1980 respectively. I cracked pack after pack in 1980 futilely searching for the Ken Hubbs-type card on Munson, but he just dropped off the face of the earth according to Topps.

Topps generally doesn't miss an opportunity like that.

My favorite is the Josh Gibson tribute card issued by Toleteros and later by Lelands

I'm sure Topps would have to get permission from the family of Clemente and Munson to produce a card like that. Perhaps they were unable to get the permission?

Did the card companies ever do any kind of tribute card to Steve Olin and Tim Crews?

Munson did not drop off the face of the earth. Sadly, he dropped into the face of the earth.

Sorry, I have no class.
