I had an opportunity to meet Mr.Labine a few years ago at an autograph show. He was a real classy guy and wonderful to talk to!

Clem Labine was one of the first cards I owned when I was a kid...I remember seeing him in a Boys Of Summer documentary and those memories always stuck with me.

RIP Clem.

He and Carl Erskine were my coaches at Dodger fantasy camp. A solid guy with lots of great stories. He never changed the haircut, either.

"He gave it everything he had, he got along with everyone and everyone loved him."--Tommy Lasorda

"He is survived by his wife, Barbara; son Clem Labine Jr. of Woonsocket, R.I.; daughters Barbara Grubbs of Reno Nev.; Gail Ponanski of Smithfield, R.I.; Kim Archambault of Smithfield; and Susan Gershkoff of Lincoln, R.I.; five grandchildren and one great grandchild."

That's about as nice an epitaph as a man could hope for in this life.

Clem was born right here in RI and has made his home up the road from me in Woonsocket (also the home of HOFer Nap Lajoie). My wife goes to the same hairdresser as Clem's wife.

One day she brought in a treasured family photo to show--from the early '50s when Clem came up as a rookie w/ the Dodgers. He had Jackie sign it to him personally back then so he could have a special memento as to having played w/ him.

I was able to get a copy made for myself and altho the photo has been seen before, the original w/ the inscription "To Clem" remains w/ the Labine family.

Here's an auction with a picture of a signed 53 Topps Archive of Clem. The seller even mentions that Clem passed away today (don't you just love that).

In any case if your a Labine fan you may be able to pick it up for a reasonable price.
