Someone posted recently on a new DVD called Reel baseball. - Baseball films from the silent era. 13 movies from that period. I meant to say on the original post that I have seen the DVD. Where else can you get the babe into your home theatre for 73 minutes. It is beyond belief. It would take me an hour to say what I want to say about, and i don't have the time. Just buy it. You will watch it over and over. You'd be nuts to miss it. There is a scene of kids ridden with Polio trying desperatly to get to the field to see the babe. One scene shows a butcher grinding a puppy dog into sausage. Amazing stuff....

The puppy takes up 10 seconds out of 73 minutes. And I am quite certain the puppy really wasn't ground up. It's Hollywood. It is the local butcher. I think you were trying to be sarcastic. There are also some great long takes on Christy pitching on one of the films. The New York Gi's playing Pittsburgh. Very cool.

Edited to say: Scott is that as funny as he gets ?

Mike- I'm sure it's a great movie as you say, but a puppy being mangled and killed isn't something I would really want to see. The rest of the film, I'm all eyes and ears.

The actual mangling is not shown...It is perceived. It is a comedy with Babe Ruth....it is mean to be a joke. Boy are we just a bit anal tonight ? Then watch it, to see a movie starring John MCGraw. No torturing of animals in that one.

I found it hard to imagine they actually showed a puppy being killed on film, that's why I found your post a bit curious.

...that posted the NYTimes review. I bought the DVD that day and it arrived this morning. I'll probably watch it tonight or tomorrow.

Barry's response reminded me of the 50th anniversary release of King Kong in theatres. I saw it at the Castro Theatre in SF. They had to stop the movie about half way through and make an announcement that if people couldn't stop hissing at the politcaly incorrect parts, that those people would be escorted out of the movie. That caused a major uproar and the manager said that those people that have a problem with it need to leave now as them making the movie unenjoyable for others would not be tolerated.

I stood up and applauded the guy for having the guts to stand up to the PCniks.

Not 5 minutes after the movie start, the lady sitting next to me started hissing again, as she had all through the movie. I got up, found an usher and she was escorted out. There wasn't anther sound to be heard the rest of the movie. I also got two passes from the manager to see the movie on another date as I was one of the people that went to manager originally during the movie to complain about all the hissing.

When viewing old movies, we need to remember that it was a different time, with different sensibilities.
