Quickly up over $1000 and a PSA 7 holder but something about this card looks funky. The type, color of the borders, etc. Maybe it is just me because I've never owned a NMT T206 Cobb but this one looks strange. Interesting the guy wants to get rid of it quick and has 0 feedback, a couple of red flags there....

David- Thanks, I missed that thread over in the BST. I guess the card is legit, I mean from the standpoint that it is a real card. I guess if I had ever owned a $20,000 T206 I would have known better. It somehow doesn't look like my SGC 30
Take care,
Bob

Take a look at bidder #2...he has 100% of his bids with a guy who has no feedback. Shocking

The description says it all

"up for bid is a 1909-1911 ty cobb baseball card.best offers accepted, want to get rid of card fast."

Most likely if you bid on a card with a description like that, with the number of feedback the seller has, then you need to give me a call with a lot of money in hand....I can show you how to save most of it....(as I take a big chunk for myself and leave you with something, which is more than you will get if you buy this)....

They have now suckered in Bidder #3, unless this is a large scale fraud operation as he does have a few bids with this seller previously (presumably under the last ID). How does this not fall under the category of criminal activity?

It's not criminal if the seller has the card and sells it to the high bidder. I say "more likely" than not this guy doesn't own this card....given what I said in my post. Could it be for real? Sure.....but I would be very surprised if it is a real auction.....

Now the current high bidder, bidder 5 at 1525.00 also has zero feedback, just like bidder 2. Wonder how high this card will be shilled????

I owned this green portrait Cobb myself recently. I consigned it to the last REA auction and it sold for $17,625.

The image shown in the auction looks like a photograph of the card, not a scan. So if the seller stole the scan from somewhere, and doesn't actually own the card, I don't know how he produced that image.

Here are scans of the card that REA used:

and here are images from the eBay auction:

He probably printed it out in color, cut it out and then took a picture of it at an angle.

It's hard to tell if it has depth from his pics.

I asked him to take a time and date stamped pic of the card, while adding a piece of paper across the bottom with his user name to show he really had it.

The current seller's image is a bit grainy, which I think is another "sign" that this auction is fishy. One of the board members said he emailed the seller to ask for a new scan with a piece of paper and ebay ID written next to the card. If produced,(with a non grainy image) guess that would prove he physically has the card. But, I don't think that will occur. If the auction goes to the end, the winner should bring cash along with law enforcement to make the exchange in person. Anyone out in Indy want to make some money recording the event, I'd pay 20 bucks(so would others) to see a video of "the exchange".

Now that's what I mean! Look at Eric's card, gorgeous and looks 100% real. Then look at the caption on the ebay one and the borders, etc. It looks like a reprint. I don't think this is the same card! These old eyes aren't what they used to be but they look different to me...

Bob - as fake as it may look, the telltale sign for me is that little brown dot to the right of Cobb's head. It is on both cards so I'm sure it is the same card.

I've only ever owned one PSA, so the card holder around the card has that frosted look. But isn't it interesting that behind the card is black. The rest of the area beyond the card holder is white. My guess is he took the image from the site, then used either perspective or distort in photoshop to make it look like it is leaning. Then he had to add additional background to the photo, or just let the program fill it in white.

look at the kodak symbol. There is not one on the REA auction picture.

He may have taken a picture with his camera of a picture. This just don't seem right to me...

Nice catch on the black color under the pic.

Living here in Indiana, I emailed the seller requesting an in-person pick-up if I were fortunate enough to win his auction. He emailed back saying that Ebay told him he would have no protection that way & he could only ship USPS, for his protection. Something tells me that the wrong person is being protected here. Total scam.

Ed you just beat me to it. I was going to say that Eric hit it dead on upthread when he said the person probably printed the REA image and laid it down flat for a photograph. The black background from REA shows up in the image, but only to the borders of the holders. A lot of people use black backgrounds to scan, but it have it that way as a photo without cutting it out of a scan would be just about impossible.

There is one interesting thing in his scan though... look at the back of the card around the "350". There appears to be a scratch on the PSA holder that runs from the bottom upward. This is not visible in the REA picture, albeit the scratch could have been from the scanner glass that was used if the guy did scan a picture he took of the REA picture.

And of course no response for my request to time/date stamp a new pic with his user name on a piece of paper across the bottom of it, to prove he has it.

Crap like this bugs me. And ebay does absolutely nothing about it, even with the warnings. Out to make a buck, they are.

When checking the bid history, then clicking bidding details, why does bidder 4 show up on all other bidders 1,2,3,5,6 view spot?? Bidder 4 had a max of 190.00? Bidder 2 and 5 were the obvious shills!

Joann, I would never pay for a scan of a Cobb card with a scan of a goat. I have my standards. Plus goats are cheap these days.

Geez Jeff. Knowing it was you I guess I should have known better than to cast aspersions on your end of the deal. Of course it was a real goat. What was I thinking? And it goes without saying that it was also not trimmed or anything like that. lol

I'll look for you to post a scan of the scan you just won in the RPU thread!

The scam artist, err, seller may have ended the auction early because of me. I E-mailed them and said the following,

"It is funny how this exact same card recently sold in a REA Auction for $17,000 and is now on eBay for such a low amount. I have notified eBay that I think something is fishy and that they should check it out.

Also, since I live in Indianapolis, I am going to bid on this card and if I win, I am going to come to your house with CASH and a State Police Officer who is a friend of mine. If you DO NOT own the card or if the card is fake, I am going to have him arrest you on the spot.

I do not know if eBay takes fraud seriously but I sure do".

Here is the response I just received.

So someone just spent 17k on a card and then dumped it in a flea market - wow - shocking. Not even a California judge is going to buy that one.

How stupid is this guy? This guy is not a very good crook. He needs to look for another line of work.

And again he has a shiller in bidder 5, as in the Cobb. Guess if I didn't win the Cobb, my next plan would be to win a Walmart gift card.

One of the rules for buying baseball cards on eBay is that the seller should show the entire front of the card-- all four edges simultaneously. It was suggested on the CU board that the card is laying on top of a holder. If this theory is correct (and I'm not saying it is), that would explain why the bottom edge is not shown-- as it is that closest edge that would most likely reveal the card to be lying on top.

Yes, thanks for chasing the scammer away, even though in this case the fraud was pretty blatant. Someone certainly could have been ripped off. It's a shame we have to spend our time and effort policing these things.

Thanks guys and you are welcome.

Because of my current monetary situation, I can not go out and find cards or collections like I was able to 10 years ago. Man that was fun. So, all I can do is read this forum, learn and sometimes contribute scans of cards from my small collection. The only other thing I can do is go after these scam artists, especially if they are in this hot bed of reprints and fakes which is called Indiana.

I am glad that I (hopefully) saved somebody some of their cash and kept this hobby/business enjoyable for them a little longer.

David
