Posted By: ManuteBolI have a couple of questions about American Caramel's E121 and E122 cards. First though, I'll admit that I know very little about collecting and may ask some dumb questions. I thought it might be fun to, over the years, try and work towards completing the E122 set. I currently have 32 of the 122's but only 15 of the 121's (set of 80), so I thought this would make the most sense. However... 1: I've found much more out there on the E121's than the E122's. a. Why is this? b. Are the 121's more common? More collectible? c. The images on the 122's appear less sharp, is this true? 2: How would I go about finding out more information about these cards? I've been trying to get information about them online, but have found it very difficult. But as one of the guides in the "detecting card alterations and reprints" says, find out as much info as you can. 3: What would be a logical way to start collecting these? Or, how did you start collecting cards of this era? This would obviously be a very long-term project, and starting small would be the way to go. I just don't know how one would get started. Posted By: Rhett YeakleyI'll start by saying that I have been collecting the "E121" Family of sets for a few years now. Everything from the Holsum Bread cards to the W501 strip cards (all of which share the same front format). My E121-like collection can be seen on the following page. <a href="http://www.starsofthediamond.com/e121.html" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.starsofthediamond.com/e121.html</a> Your question about the E122 set is a good one, and an accumulation of 32 differen E122's is fairly impressive. The E122's are indeed tougher than your average E121 card, there are some tough E121's from each of the sets that dont come up for sale too often though. What many don't realize is that the E122 set appears to have been made from using the E121 cards that the American Caramel Co. had made and rephotographing them with simply adding a new frame around the old card. The following would be a rough guess about the chronology of the E121 sets (all 3 Series of 80 back types, the E122, and the Series of 120 backs). You can see the "transition" from the bottom line on back to the type used on the later E122 and E121-120 sets. Have most of the yankees series of 120 and some of the series of 80, Just started on the giants. My great great uncle was Elmer Miller from this set. Ruth is a fairly valuable card if it is legit.
