The deal is structured in a way that the team risk is less because shorter term(the issue with the ankle is that it is degenerative in nature (arthritic over time) and no way to reverse it once it really progresses. They claim the early years not an issue vs the later years and that is why the Mets and Giants were afraid of the long term deals with out some protections
