Mailman delivered mine in SoCal today. Very impressed with the quality
and content. Going to sit down with a cup of coffee shortly and take
an in depth look at it.

Default pretty great book

I have always liked the history of the game but it is hard to find the history by player. I knew some background about many of the T206 players but this is the first place I've found with color on skills and reputation in addition to the stats. I flipped through the book when I first got it and was really impressed with it overall. I bet I've gone back to the book 20 times since I set it on my coffee table to see what the story is on each guy as different players come to mind. Enjoyable read. Only negative from my experience is the trouble I got in for ordering a copy because my wife said she had already ordered me a copy for father's day. Caps off to the authors on this one.

I wish they would have used real cards in the book instead of reprints, I think it loses the feel of the era. The cards look so fake.

Most of the bios could be written just by looking at the players career stats in total baseball etc ( ie won 69 games, played for Detroit from 1909-11, played for 21 years etc).

Does the book gives any info about the players' lives after retiring ?

Are all the cards depicted reprints?

They show some graded (PSA) examples, but the profile pictures are all reprints. I too would've preferred to see 'well loved' examples instead. Beautiful book though. Certainly one to leave out around the house.

I received my copy from Barnes & Noble this week. The book is great fun. As for the bios, if you want more info on the majority of the T206 players the two volume set by SABR is wonderful.

The DEADBALL STARS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE and same title just substitute AMERICAN LEAGUE are really special. The two volumes go team by team and give bios on every major and most minor starters & pitchers 1901-20. The bios trace the player from development through death and in most cases they have the players signature next to the bio.

Both volumes are still available through Potomac books, I think in either soft or hard cover.

I found it interesting that so many became very successful in their post baseball careers and disturbing when finding how many of them died early in life. I suppose they reflect the trends of the times.

I didn't mind the reproductions. Foreward and author's note set expectations (for me) that book was focused on the players rather than the cards. But, to each his own...
