Default Pronunciation of Sweet Caporal

Is it pronounced Sweet "Cuh-POOR-al" or Sweet "CAP-ur-al"? Just curious.

I used to say Cuh-POOR-al until I heard CAP-ur-al. When I heard CAP-ur-al, I felt like an idiot, thinking I had it wrong for years.

I tend to hear CAP-ur-al more often.

I had only ever heard it as CAP-ur-al until last week. I'm assuming I'm right.

I feel like an idiot too... Been saying Sweet Cap-pore-al for the 20 years since I got my first one.

I also said "goo-dee" for years before hearing another person say it and pronounce it as "gow-dee"... I've only ever heard it pronounced that way since.

Funny thread. Actually I had it wrong twice!

About two weeks after I began collecting T206's I was online showing my wife some cards that were for sale on Ebay. When I showed her a SC I said to her, "These are Sweet CORPORAL'S, they're one of the more common back ad's". She replied, "That doesn't say Corporal you idiot".

Also, I thought it was Cuh-POOR-al until I read this thread.

While we're at it, is it "You-Zit", or Ooze-Zit?

Classic! I thought EPDG were El "Principal" De Gales for a long time.

I'm on the "You-Zit" bandwagon

Default Sweet Caps

I say Sweet cah- por- 'OWL.

Reminds me of Mel Brooks calling Count de Monet, "Count the Money" in History of the World Part I. When will the sequel be released?

I don't think anyone can be completely wrong in this thread. I mean, we live in a country where Nomar Garciaparra was "No-mahhh Gah-see-up-pahahhhh" to his hometown fans.. and I'm not about to challenge any of the Fenway faithful on that one.

"Gooooo-dee..... gooo-dee... goo-dee.. goo-dee!!" (said in same cadence as Animal House toga chant). I guess us San Franciscans think alike. I now feel empowered to bring goo-dee back into my life.

BTW- how about another offense fueled come back tonight! These are not your 2010-2012 Giants.

Default Goudey

I have French Louisiana relatives who would say that it is pronounced goo-'DAY, but I'm not about to walk up to a dealer table in TX and pronounce it like that. The price would go up 4 fold. In TX they call them Gowdys like Howdy.

Default Sweet Caps!

I simply call them "sweet caps". No worries about placing emPHAsis on the wrong syLLAble.

I've always pronounced it CAP-or-al.

As justification, I go back to the opening scene of Pride of the Yankees, where the young Lou Gehrig tries to get into the baseball game by trading a bunch of "Sweet CAP-or-al" cards to the other kids.

In WNY State we pronounced it Yeng-Ling, which is practically the same.
