Happy New Year - January, 2014 Pick Up's
I know that I am jumping the gun a bit here but it is New Year's Day already in many countries around the world!
Very excited to pick this one up on the bay despite a furious rush of offers and negotiations within a couple of hours of being listed, 1946 Newark Eagles original photo w/4 HOF'ers: Irvin, Doby, Day & Mackey along with several other Negro League stars. Originated from Monte Irvin's personal collection.......... |

happy new year pick ups
My wife had a 1920 world series photo-- of jamieson stealing second in the
final game-- framed for my office walls. I now have framed-- on the walls--one world series scene for each year from 30-49; 15 and 17; 20 and 28. For the years without a scene, I have representative photos for each year of interesting players often chosen so as to represent the various presses and photographers of the eras as well. The many office walls now show 1910-1949, all type one. Looking forward to finishing up cards to represent a player from each photo . Just a couple or so left. all the best and happy new year everyone. barry |

Wow, that is a nice one! Just having the complete box is a huge plus, and the ball is beautiful. I wouldn't sweat the wear on the box. Small price to pay for keeping that ball looking so good!

I picked up a stellar Jackie Robinson letter written in 1955(year of ws win no less). It was to a Mil. sportswriter regarding a "rhubarb" Jackie had with the Mil. media and ultimately his fist fight with bad arse Eddie Mathews the year prior. I have wanted a special autographed piece of Jackie for some time now and this one fit the bill. I love letters.. the baseball content got me(Jackie backed away from nothing). The envelope was also signed. I am very pleased to add to my 42 collection(Attached a couple photos so you all feel his presence-haha).

Vander Meer oddball?
Maybe I'm losing my mind?
Probably... I couldn't resist picking up these original circa 1938 sterling silver cufflinks and tie pin that feature a calendar with June 11th marked. June 11th, 1938 is the date that Johnny Vander Meer threw his first of two consecutive no-hitters. Honestly, I have no way to directly link these personally to Vander Meer (yet), but what a strange coincidence. These literally landed in my lap and I felt that they should end up in my advanced Vandy collection since the price was right and I think they are cool. Happy New Year to everyone on net54! If those are Vander Meer's they certainly found the right home. These four items likely would only appeal to me but they are my first pickups of the new year. I cannot believe there are many 1971 Pirates Spring Training programs out there. The scorecard is from game #7. The 1971 game 2 NLCS stub has long been on my want list. This is the first opportunity I have had to add one to my 1971 Buc collection. Bob Robertson hit three homers this game while Willie Mays hit his only career post season homer. For some reason all San Francisco items from this series have been hard to come by. The Pittsburgh ones seem to be much more obtainable. Does anyone have any ideas why this disparity exists?

Stanford Pottery Banks
I'm extremely excited to have picked up my second Detroit Tigers Stanford pottery bank in a month. This will look nice next to the mascot head I purchased. Both were ebay purchases and I love them!!! I'm new to the Stanford pottery world, but these seem to be scarce.

1920s Joe Sewell Game Worn Cleats
The most recent addition to the Hall of Fame case in my office is this pair of 1920s cleats worn by Joe Sewell (1977 HOF inductee).
Along with the cleats I also received a letter from Joe Sewell written to the previous owner as well as a gold HOF plaque postcard and the original box addressed by Mr. Sewell to the previous owner (which is who I bought them from). Joe Sewell was the most difficult man in major league history to strike out. In 7,132 at-bats he struck out only 114 times. He also holds the record for consecutive games without a strikeout, at 115. http://baseballhall.org/hof/sewell-joe

Coliseum seats
Didn't see that there was already a thread started, so I deleted my old post...
Picked up this pair of New Haven Coliseum Interlocking floor seats at my local flea market today (Yes, the redwood flea market is open despite the near zero temps...) Thought that they were pretty cool given the former Coliseum's history (Aerosmith, Bob Dylan, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, The Allman Brothers, and one of my personal favorites ZZ Top)... They didn't last long... I showed them to a good friend who just bought his first home, he made me an offer (which I refused) and gave them to him as a housewarming gift... No longer mine, but I thought I would share... |

1969 Pittsburgh Sports Hall of Fame
Found this out of print book. Was published by a local Pittsburgh printer who also happens to be the illustrator of the book.
A few short years, Pittsburgh would be Chanpions in baseball (1972) and football (1974-76). The baseballc section is outstanding from Honus Wagner to Roberto Clemente. As you can see, some great Negro Leagues are covered along with golf (Palmer), hockey (Hornets) and boxing. Last edited by Copa7; 01-18-2014 at 03:03 PM. |

1939 Goldsmith Uniform swatch catalogue featuring Johhny Vander Meer
Unusual Goldsmith uniform swatch catalogue pickup from MLB's centennial year 1939 featuring Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer on back cover.
Pretty cool! Just curious, vintage equipment specialists, how challenging are these to find? I had never seen one... Last edited by Scott Garner; 01-23-2014 at 07:57 PM. |
