Not an Old Judge proof. That pose was used in 1887 when Brouthers was on Detroit. This cabinet was obviously made after he moved to Boston in 1889. Not sure how an Old Judge image ended up on a Conly mount though. It could be that Conly purchased the image from Goodwin or this could be an Old Judge photo rebacked on a Conly mount. No idea.

And here's a Betz Studio Cabinet of the 1894 Orioles team with Keeler, McGraw and Jennings amongst others. I've been after this card for years and haven't had any luck in finding one with a nice image, until two weeks ago in Hunt's auction. Somehow I turned on the live auction one lot too late and missed it. Incredibly, as I was leaving the show I spotted the very card on a table at nearly a 100% markup. The seller was kind enough to sell it to me for only a 40% markup (and I was genuinely thrilled to get it).

The pickups in this thread are amazing.

Jeff the seamless postcard is one of the most incredible pieces I've ever seen. What a pose. Your collection leaves one speechless.

Congrats!!!!

Hello Brian. Jay is spot on, the Brouthers proofs date to 1887 and are found on Gray Studio mounts (just like most of the other 1887 teams).

Example here:
https://www.detroithistorical.org/le...inet-25#slide1

In early 1888 the glass plate negative was marked with name, position, and team (DETROITS). Some time after Brouthers signed with Boston (Oct 16, 1888), the Goodwin negatives were updated to Boston (likely happened early 1889).

The albumen print is likely from 1889 but not sure how it ended up on Conly mount. It is possible that Conly made Old Judge cards and cabinets for Goodwin but havent seen other examples of on Conly mounts.

Might study print and mount a little closer to see if damage and markings match such as the crease at upper left.

It is a nice image of Brouthers, could be interesting insight into who made the 1889 N172s and N173s.

Default National pickups

great show. I was able to find a great example of the Beecher to add to my set, down to one card. I saw only this one Beecher at the show (well, that guy on REA Marketplace is holding so many, all of which are not as nice as this one.)

I also added some floating hot dogs to my growing set, but there werent many in the room and the Williams was marked very high on a few tables (thankfully i bought that one first).

Finally, i couldnt resist this group of 8 E93’s (and one E95 of Crawford) that were too beautiful to pass up. Now a new project….

the National was so much fun, i am sorry to have to wait a year for the next one. Those concrete floors though…rough on the body.

Thanks guys this helps!

It has the same back as Daley, Haddock and Buffington in the following lot REA sold from 1891:

https://collectrea.com/archives/2022...-collection-10

I bought it from a very reputable dealer who is an expert in this era photographs so I really don't think it was rebacked. Is it possible that Conly purchased the rights of the photo to use around 1891 as he was still in Boston at this time? (1889-91) Are there any other examples of Studios buying from Goodwin to reissue Cabinets around this time?

Following up on what Joe said I doubt that Conly was involved in the 1889 or early-1890 Old Judge production process. Could Conly have bought the rights to the image and produced cards of it on its' own mount---this is possible, but raises the question of why would Conly, a Boston photographer, need to buy someone else's image--it could shoot its' own. I think the most likely scenario is a rebacking, albeit a professional looking one.
I think you are right to look at when Conly used that style mount. Brouthers played in Boston from 1889-1891. However, in 1890 he was on the Player's League team, and I believe Conly did his own photographs of that team. If the mount style dates from 1891 why use a Goodwin image when Conly had its' own 1890 ones or could shoot new ones. Therefore, to me the only hope of the cabinet being a true Conly issue is if it is from 1889. To me this is the second most likely case after rebacking. If the mount style is post-1889 it makes it difficult for me to believe that it is anything but rebacked.

Sorta anticlimactic I suppose. Was on tilt after once again dithering on a card and missing out (this time Geoff’s wonderful Cy Young Barehand). BUT! I did manage to close out (74) T206 HOFers. Endless thanks to the Net54 community for helping me get it done.

Speaking of Zeenut, highlights from a recent acquisition. Still sorting through the rest of the lot. Probably sending these four to SGC for peace of mind. The Coveleski is interesting since the only other one I've seen has brown belt/brown glove, though this gray glove would be in line with other color variants.

Of these 3 cards that I won in Stering, I am most thrilled to get the Exhibit card, because additions to my Sam Rice collection are few and far between these years. The Hartsel card completes my back run for this pose.

Nice pickup on the Zeenut Coveleski! That's a tough one. Mine has the brown glove so I guess it's the more "common" variation.

A "well loved," yet classic card .........

Probably the most "far-reaching" caption change in the T213-2 set:

Billy Chappelle, Rochester is depicted as Larry Chappell, Cleveland.

Did Larry play for Cleveland during T213-2 production .................. ????

Of course he did .................... !!!

Fun, fun, Scott

Love the Maple Crispette Ruth and US Caramel Gehrig above as well!!! and the T206 Cobb and Goudey Ruths!

Random online find for $5 each, three 1936 National Chicle Fine Pens, Radcliffe/Hartnett, Kit Carson and Leon Goslin. Not the best condition, but well worth $5 a piece.
