Great thread!! I too prefer the Paige 53 Topps. Its one of my favorite cards ever, if not my favorite.
I would also mention the Monte Irvin Red Man Tobacco card. Very affordable and absolutely beautiful. The Minoso is superb as well. Larry Doby '51 Bowman perhaps the best of the set; one of the best of the 50s. Jackie's 54 topps is very affordable contextually, but his '53 to me is absolutely iconic!! You can also get a willie mays exhibit card for just a couple of bucks. Identify it well by using tools online; you can even mark one printed in his rookie year!
