Why would they not just consign that pennant to a major auction house? They would probably reach a much wider and educated audience.

Can one of the pennant experts confirm that this is an authentic pennant? It looks like one of those Frakenpennants that show up from time to time. I am not a pennant collector, but it looks really suspicious to me.

This pennant had some discussion in the last several posts of the "Hey Pennant Guys" thread....

I guess the pennant looks to good to be true? Either way, interesting to see what the outcome will be.

I hate to even comment until this thing mercifully ends. Pennant is probably ok, and has subtle differences from the Franken-pennants discussed earlier. Can expound on that in a few days.

I've reported this thing a few times over the past few days, since the bidder with 42 feedback is one of the more obvious shillings I've seen. Apparently eBay doesn't do anything about reported items any longer though, since anyone could identify the horrific shilling on this in two seconds.

I think the pennant should sell in the $4000 to $5000 range. At this point 2 people are bidding, one shill and another. There are still 68 others watching it. Pretty soon the shill will not matter

Everyone might want to go back to the listing on ebay and read the comment the seller posted this morning.

Yah
I'm sure that is what he's gonna do with it, donate it.
And if does, please let us know where he donates it to, would love to come take a look at it. Great pennant! |

In my opinion the problem is that the guy who you may think is shill bidding on the pennant is just doing so in a way that gives the appearance of a shill bid. Most of us here recognized it from experience. The seller is saying that he is not a shill and we have to take him at his word. Problem now is he says he will end it so we will never see what happens to this great pennant and that's sad for all of us.
As I've said all week, great pennant. Thanks for letting us see it |

Sure you can, you can see it at the museum he is going to donate it to.

Yes, a thousand apologies Curt
Also, no reason the end the auction if there is no shilling involved. In fact why would you end it? To get back at a few people who questioned if there might be shill bidding going on? That's done every day on the card side here, people questioning Ebay auctions/Ebay sellers, they don't stop selling/end their auctions, not the legit ones anyway. The ones that do end their auctions when called on it.....hmmmmmm you can put 2 & 2 together. Stopping the auction out of spite????? Not following that thinking. and your "pain in the neck" has a $4250 bid in so far, that's some pain in the neck, I wish I had some jerk offering me $4250 for an item, boy I'd tell him to pound sand! I am confident this seller is on the up and up and trust worthy. Hopefully the auction will continue to the end. Let's cut the crap, and just enjoy watching this auction.

boy what a bummer (he said sarcastically) for bidder #42......bids $12,757.00 and loses out by $10 dollars.........ohhhh the humanity.......I would have lent him 12 bucks if he wanted it. And #42 is once again a bridesmaid.
urban SHOCKER!!!!! On a positive note for # 42, he now has 12K to win the marbles.....oh wait he lost out on those too. Last edited by Shoeless Moe; 06-14-2015 at 05:27 PM. |

I know it is flawless and a one of but that price is nuts IMO. Apparently the winner has extremely deep pockets and wanted it bad enough not to care what the final price would be. Maybe they had a maximum bid far exceeding the final price. Drama aside, still glad it surfaced and made itself known to the collector community. Congrats to the new owner .

But the crazed "under-bidder" (or whatever he was) cost the winner roughly $5,300. If he's really legit, what a waste of time and effort on his part!

The crazed "I have unlimited time, and have never heard of sniping" guy actually won one....

Part of me feels sorry for the underbidder. Whether he "lost his marbles" or not (pun intended ), it appears he really really really wanted it. Maybe not the wisest bidding strategy.

Very interesting question regarding the winning bidder. I would bet he upped his snipe a few times, as the madness progressed on this one.
Just guessing, as that's exactly what I would've done! |

Meanwhile, the card guys will start the bidding on a '52 Mantle....a piece of cardboard....at twice that price. And, you'll see pre-war cards start at 8 times that amount.

You are right Rob. The one thing about these early pennants , if you miss out on a pennant , you may wait many years and never see another . While card collectors will bid thousands on a baseball card that can be found for sale at every National Convention or major auction in all types of grades, throughout the year, case in point the 52 Mantle. With pennant and other rare memorabilia , it is pretty difficult to establish value due the limited sales history .
