Meanwhile, the card guys will start the bidding on a '52 Mantle....a piece of cardboard....at twice that price. And, you'll see pre-war cards start at 8 times that amount.

You are right Rob. The one thing about these early pennants , if you miss out on a pennant , you may wait many years and never see another . While card collectors will bid thousands on a baseball card that can be found for sale at every National Convention or major auction in all types of grades, throughout the year, case in point the 52 Mantle. With pennant and other rare memorabilia , it is pretty difficult to establish value due the limited sales history .
