The original flips had no number, just the alphabetic grade vg/ex, mint, etc.
I will find my NSCC program from the first Atlanta National where the PSA ad shows such flips. It has been years since I encountered the original flip with no numeric grade in the wild.

The long bar codes definitely were around for a number of years if my memory of it is right.
