The flip they say was first and issued from 1991 to 1992 was used atleast until 1996 as I submitted cards in 1996 that had the flip as the 1982 Topps Ronnie Lott example.

The original flips had no number, just the alphabetic grade vg/ex, mint, etc.

I will find my NSCC program from the first Atlanta National where the PSA ad shows such flips. It has been years since I encountered the original flip with no numeric grade in the wild.

Another little known fact, for a brief period of time the lower end of the grading scale was different. From memory, it went Poor, Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent -- I had a VG 4 Goudey Gehrig.

Yep. I once had a 1952 Topps Monte Irvin purchased in a collection in a PSA 4 VG or something to that affect. Wish I would have kept it for reference. It was probably before I had a computer or scanner.
