Gambling...this is the hobby now more than ever when it comes to people who buy the new stuff. It's always been gambling in a sense because prospecting isn't a sure thing and opening packs don't guarantee anything, but the money involved the past 10-15 years is astronomical.
The "buy in" is astronomical even on non-premium products.
The days when you could buy a few boxes and affordably put together even a simple Topps flagship set has been gone for a long time. The "hits" make the cases, boxes, and even packs high priced lotto tickets.
A preorder case of Topps Chrome Baseball comes out to around $300 a box...20 packs per box...4 cards per pack. That is $3.75 per card. Wow.
