That's one of the most naive comments I have ever read.

The original statement was incorrect. I was curious enough to check it. I strongly suspect that they meant to say Amazon, not Bezos. It it was true, based on those numbers, his personal wealth would be over $1 trillion. As of October there were 10 publicly traded companies valued at over $1 trillion. Amazon was in that group, but not the most valuable. There are no individuals with that large a personal wealth, excluding a certain person recently in the news.

Holy BLEEP is this thread BLEEPING awesome. It reminds me of the Covid threads with one or two people posting insane things that make zero sense in the real world.
Lets be honest if you buy/sell baseball cards you need to reconsider calling anyone greedy or privileged. |

You think Jeter's bad just see how much when Namath does a signing how much they get for him signing his 1965 Topps RC. And then all others before 1970 to be signed was $999.

In 1981, Tom Petty famously fought his record label, MCA, to prevent them from raising the price of his album "(Hard Promises)" from the standard $8.98 to $9.98. He threatened to withhold the album, stating that he wanted to keep costs low for his fans and prevent a precedent of "superstar pricing" where album prices would continue to rise. The label ultimately backed down and sold the album at the customary price. Thanks Derek for NOTHING. AND you're a bore on TV and you and Brady are a festering Boil on the ASS of the hobby. |

Since Mr Jeter has made 100s of millions of dollars him signing for any price should be seen as him doing it for the fans. He isn't even making pocket change doing these signings and to see so many ungrateful people is sad, very sad.

I don't think anyone has any reason to be "grateful" for his signing for money, regardless of the price. It's a business transaction, nothing more. "Oh, thank you, King Derek, for taking my money! I am not worthy!" Pfft. Not to mention that most things signed at the base price don't really stand a shot of being great investments. If you want something to make money on, you're ponying up. Frankly, that is understandable and should be to anyone. Lowering the price of more pedestrian items such as balls, plaques, photos, and most cards would definitely make sense. Or, interested buyers are always free to simply pay less on the secondary market. Some people might chime in with the rebuttal that the base price material does stand a chance at becoming a decent investment. If so, how long would we have to wait to see that happen? The popularity of Mantle never waned and all items have kept going up. Even so, certain lower-end pieces have often experienced longer periods of stagnation vs. nicer material. Outside of cream of the crop-type pieces, it feels like widespread Jetermania has really faded. With Jeter, the base price stuff, and even things such as certain RCs have really not fared that well over 20 years. If you want these items, they can still be had at pretty low prices relative to the $600 base price, and nearly all cards and most RCs for less than the four figures he charges now. Yes, due to the number of different card issues produced, if you have the desire for a certain card, some will pose a challenge to find, but is it worth $1100 to cross that name off your list, or will you wait and hope for something to pop up for $2-300 on the secondary market? And yes, in order to find the better prices, you may have to be confident enough in your knowledge and the source of the material in order to purchase some of the cards without authentication. It can be done, though. Last edited by BillyCoxDodgers3B; Today at 08:35 AM. |

We're all being so rudely ungrateful to Mr. Jeter for taking the time--away from all the really important things he has to do--to sign his name a few times. But the workers at Walmart and McDonalds, who actually do things that are needed by society (I don't think you're gonna restock the shelves at the Walmart supermarket, are you Ben? Especially during a pandemic.) are "overpaid," but still "low wage morons." You're really quite a piece of work. (Or are you just a Musk-programmed bot? (Well, programmed by one of his engineers; Musk can't code.) Last edited by David Atkatz; Today at 11:26 AM. |

One pushes inflation by constantly wanting more and not understanding their wage increase directly causes inflation. It is amazing how most everyday low level employees can't understand how paying them more makes the product cost more. ![]() As to Jeter, he is doing his actual fans a great service. I get that the flippers are pissed because they can't instantly flip his auto for a profit and it pisses them off. Now I bet the real fans who only want it because it came from Jeter while they watched him sign it will keep lining up for the experience. I get paying extra for an experience. Kinda like the $12 soda at the game. It is just part of the price of the experience. |

Ben,
You have to be pulling our legs for your own personal amusement. Please just admit it for the sake of my sanity. I've read many of your other posts and they strike me as almost coming from a different person.

So I begrudge no one for asking what they (or their people) do. And adding to the mix that MANY pieces which people pay exorbitant amounts to have autographed are then resold at a profit than who really is to blame? And David, since you like to get so technical in what you say and your interpretations of what others do too - no show promoter is paying their bills off a Jeter signing. He does not make appearances like that. So actually, it nearly all flows back to he and his people. He has eliminated the middle man. And I don't think any less of him for it. And evidently the people who keep paying don't either. Last edited by balltrash; Today at 03:29 PM. |

Standing in line after having paid my money, finally getting to stand in front of my seated hero while he signs whatever is put in front of him without looking up, and then quickly moving on? An experience I'd much rather forget. And probably will. |
