Fresh out of the 5-cent waxpack, these 5 cards were MINT. The Hal Jeffcoat & Billy Herman cards were hardly touched ; and therefore, still pretty sharp looking.
The Ben Chapman (actually the picture is that of Sam Chapman) card was handled often. I traded the George Spencer card to my NY Giants buddy; and, later, I
recovered it from him.

And, the Mantle card was "loved", therefore quite worn. The diagonal line down from his left ear is a surface scratch (not a crease). I have a TRIVIA ? regarding
this card's number "311"....what is the significance of this number ?

I recovered all the sports and non-sports cards from my youthful collection (1947 - 1952) in 1977.

1951 Topps Red Back pack. Although I've never opened it I've thought about it many times. It's the only unopened pack I've got and I think it's pretty neat. Relatively inexpensive too.

Haha...well this thread just cost me about 15 bucks. I collected cards alot as a kid but havent messed with them much since late 90s. I just bought 3 packs of 1982 topps off ebay on an impulse. I just saw them and knew the Ripken RC is in the set. Anyone tell me if 15 bucks shipped is a bad deal for these (assuming they are authentic)?

Last night I opened a wax box of 1983 Topps. I was hoping for the Gwynn, Boggs and Sandberg RCs.

About halfway through, I opened a pack and the Sandberg was the card facing the wax - and contained wax residue. Then I flipped the cards over and the Gwynn was on the other side - with a stick of gum firmly stuck to the back. Damnit.

I did get a Boggs - very OC unfortunately - and another Gwynn - OC as well. Didn't get another Sandberg, but plenty of other HOFs.

Fun stuff opening old wax. Last week I opened a box of 89 Topps and 12 packs of 90 Donruss. Even though these cards aren't 'worth' anything, they were the ones I collected as a kid. So the nostalgia was worth it.

Have a box of 1984 Topps wax and a 1982 Topps cello box sitting on my table calling my name...

I opened a 1955 topps cello pack around 15-20 years ago there were 24 cards----I can still remember going to my sports room and with a little penknive opened the pack carfully----one of the first cards i saw was a Roberto Clemente RC---then Yogi Berra---Duke Snider--and yes another Roberto Clemente Rookie---all the cards were near mint-mint---I would think the clementes would be at least a 8---there was not grading then----I had the pack at a Ed Keetz show in Albany for $1500 with no takers---on the way home, I thought what the heck, even if I get all commons, they are still worth $20 each---the pack was high numbers----it was the greatest pack I opened---I sold all the cards and kept the better Clemente until a friend offered me $2600 plus tickets to Aerosmith (and also to meet them)--he did the lighting for Aerosmith---I also gave Joe Perry a Larry Bird Rookie for his son at the concert.----I hate to tell the story because most people would think (oh yea--right---2 Clementes in a pack---but it did happen. Don

1975 Topps regular mini's are about as far back as I can go. I have pulled anything all that out of the ordinary, but enjoy busting the 80's wax to this day.
