Authenticating signatures that were later deemed forgeries, autographs obtained in person being opined as a fake. It doesn't matter how many autographs this person has purchased over the years. What matters is the accuracy with which each individual autograph is considered. I don't want to pay somebody $50 bucks for an auto on a $1,000 card if they're just going to look at it and say "ya, that looks right". For the authentication to be accurate, the signature in question should be compared to known, authenticated examples. They need to be looking at the signature under magnification, and I just don't know if this service is spending the time necessary.

The important thing to remember is that when you pay for this service, you are purchasing an opinion. I know that people on Ebay think that having a PSA/DNA, or a JSA authentication is a gold mine. All I'm saying is exercise caution. Never has the phrase "caveat emptor" been more appropriate.

SGC Authentic Press Release

SGC has recently developed a new autograph authentication division (SGC Authentic). The division will be headed by Mike Root (Director of Authentication/Senior Authenticator). Mike has owned and operated sports collectibles stores for the past 20 years. Mike has spent that time buying and selling autographs, as well as attending countless sporting events and signings where he acquired thousands of in person autographs. Mike was the former Director of Authentication and Lead Authenticator for a nationally recognized third party authentication service for the past three years. With a wide range of knowledge and a top notch team of consultants SGC is looking forward to authenticating autographs throughout the hobby.

I came across this 80 T Fred Stanley card with the yellow print variation...any ideas on if this is a tough card or not? The next card is a 1967 Topps FB card of Ben Davidson (I know this is the BB forum), BUT, it is mis cut and has the edge of a 68 Topps baseball card on it's bottom edge. Does anyone have any ideas how a 67 FB card would be cut next to a 68 BB card?? Were the 68 BB and 67 FB cards on the same sheets, or were the sheets themselves from the same group of card stock?

Chipped another 54 Topps monster off the list, getting close.

The Ben Davidson card is from the 1968 Milton Bradley board game "Win-a-card". The board game had 1967 T FB, 1968 T BB, and some Topps Roadster cards.

Default Mantle Tab Bottle Cap

I just picked this one up off of ebay. I was so excited to come across the Tab variation of this that I didn't examine the picture all that well before bidding. Anyone have any idea what the gray foam material is around the inside? Given the wear on the inside and out, I would say this is legit. Just not sure if it came with this or not. Never seen another with that rubbery material on it.

Thanks Randy....this makes perfect sense. In comparing the color of the back of this 67 FB card, it matches the color of my 68 BB MBs cards perfectly. And as with the 68 MB BB having a slightly different color on the back than the regular issue, the same is true with the 67 MB FB. Thanks again

I have noticed that the Yankees and Mets are the only two teams with 1967 Coca Cola caps made that way, apparently the bottling plant in the New York area had a unique way of manufacturing the caps. Each teams caps were made by the local bottling plant.

Thanks Cliff. Very interesting. Glad to hear it is something from the factory.

Most of the eleven cards on the top row of each of the E* and F* sheets from the 1980 Topps set were affected by a printing flaw where the red ink didn't go all the way to the top of the card. There are varying degrees of the depth, and each card is affected differently, some in the name, some in the position pennant, and some in the top border line. The affected cards that I know of are Ted Cox, Sammy Stewart, Junior Kennedy, Junior Moore, Fred Stanley, John Wathan, Dave Rader, Reggie Cleveland, Steve Braun, Harry Chappas, Tom Poquette, Rafael Landestoy, U. L. Washington, and Will McEnaney. There are several on eBay, usually $50-$100.
