I was shocked to learn that he was the first professional athlete to come out during his playing career. I would have thought it had already been done. Good for him, either way.

I was also surprised that he was the first active professional athlete to come out. I heard something about a player for the LA Galaxy in the MLS was spotted training with the team, not sure of his name, but he had announced he was gay and retired.
