Is it possible that the printer experimented with blue ink on the caps of Davis and Lennox? Perhaps to make them stand out better against the dark background? Perhaps when they saw it didn't make much difference in the final look they gave up on the extra blue ink print run.

The printer had some ink left over from a BLUE OLD MILL run and being frugal he used it for Blue Caps. On days when there was no left over ink...no Blue Caps.....
