Ya the torn paper also made me think twice. The good thinng is I got a full refund without any hassle. Rick had no issue with me wanting to cancel the transaction and understood my concern. I did email him a few hours after asking him if I was to re-purchase and send it to sgc and it came back not authentic if he would give me a full refund, but he stated he was going to show it to sgc at the national and get their opinion. I know I made the right choice returning it especially after all of the info ive gotten from everybody. I do think that next time someone as reputable as probstein has something like this for sale again it should be authenticated first so there is no confusion.

Are you saying that all reputable sellers should have all of their items (or at least, all their postcards) authenticated before auctioning? I doubt many here would agree with you.

A better statement might be that all prospective bidders who can't tell if an item is real or not, and have more faith in TPA's opinions than in sellers', should only bid on slabbed items.

Ok let me re-phrase that. No I dont think every single thing needs to be authenticated, but i do think that more research needs to be done on items that a seller is not confident or sure about. I emailed probstein prior to the end of the auction and he had no idea when it was from and did not know any history on it. He listed it as a "vintage" babe ruth postcard. Also said based on the origin of the postcard it "should be real". I did not get people's opinions on this until after the auction ended. There are members on here who have bought postcards that looked 100% legit and found out later they were fakes. Like people said if this postcard was in fact the real deal it would be worth thousands, so in a case like that yes I feel it shouldve been authenticated before hand so bidders know exactly what theyre bidding on.

When it comes to postcards, the authenticators don't know as much as most collectors here. It is a specialized niche and the authenticators at grading companies stub their toes on postcards and other non-standard issues all the time. The only defense against being duped is knowledge and experience and even then it happens. Part of life.
