Great idea for a thread! I love to collect Joe Jackson items.
I was always fascinated with Shoeless Joe. I believe he is one of the best players to ever play the game. He doesn't have too many cards to choose from. I tried to focus on the toughest cards of his first. Leon, if you ever decide to sell that Successful Farming promo card, please give me first crack at it. That Boston Store card is a real knockout, love the uniform in that shot. Great contrast in that image, too. Always loved the composition of that photo as well, the way he's standing just right of center, and his shadow falling on the ground.
Here's a low-resolution scan of my one Shoeless Joe card; will take a better one when I have it in hand. Last edited by MattyC; 09-09-2013 at 06:32 PM. |

Not a card but a photo from the 1910 Reach guide. Joe as a member of the Savannah, Ga minor league team (#10).

But, I'm right there with you. As far as the hobby is concerned, Shoeless Joe represents a perfect storm of sorts-a great baseball player, an enigmatic man, involvement in one of the most interesting moments in baseball history, and relative scarcity of pre-war collecting options. Quote:

David, I'll share the link back to the epic discussion that took place on Net 54 about this very card: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=124045 Kenny, thank you for the additional information. I am loving this thread, guys. Some amazing pieces in your collections. How inspiring, indeed! By the way, John Thorn, who is Major League Baseball's official historian, recently showcased an article about Jackson that appeared in Baseball Magazine from March of 1916. I found the article interesting, as it was obviously published prior to the 1918 World Series. Reading about the man without any hint of the stigma that would later attach to his name provides an unadulterated look at the man, and his talents. http://ourgame.mlblogs.com/2013/08/0...r-in-the-game/

Sean-- finding that card at all in decent shape, let alone at a fair price and then how quickly you did: PROPS. Can't thank you enough for that permanent addition to the collection!

How about an ad to mail in for a Joe Jackson? Ten players for ten cents or 25 for $2.50. Sounds like a deal.

Is a playing card a card?

Those look like the same images used for the 1914 WG4 "Polo Grounds" Card Game set.
