Seems to me that the best way to combat consignment shilling is to retract your own bid when you notice it. Let the shiller win it. Unless that can't be fine right before the auction ends.

still not sure why anyone would bid before the ebay auction is near-ending. You are just asking to be shilled.
Bid at the last second, and the shiller can't play his bid-retraction games. He takes a chance at being stuck w/the card.

Given some of the other moves eBay has made in recent years, I am surprised they still show how many bid retractions a bidder has. IMO, that seems like something that will eventually get eliminated in order to make auctions less transparent.
