Default Vandy pickup

I recently picked up this 1939 vintage Johnny Vander Meer Black's Annual.
These have to be fairly scarce because I've never come across one of them.

Just picked this up. It's from a photo album that contained a team photo that had been cut to make a photo collage. I believe this is the 1934 Cleveland Red Sox of the Negro National League.

I don't remember the rules about this sort of thing showing an auction before it is over but this is a nice looking item

good luck to the winning bidder

The general rule is to post your thoughts after the auction has ended. Outing auctions via the Internet is considered by most to be a no-no.

Agree with Mark.

Jim, you're limited to a single hotdog at the National next year.

Brock, I agree. I feel like I've seen plain silver balls like that, that could be antique silver plated and engraved. And that box strikes me as odd.

I wish I had bought that lemonpeel silver presentation ball on ebay last year with the Minnesota Indian motif. Really upset I didn't buy that and have been on the lookout for 19th century silver presentation balls since. But this one I'm not going for. If anyone has such pieces, please reach out via PM.

I just remembered where I've seen plain balls like that in silver from the 19th cent - the Chinese silver hand balls for exercising your hand. Can come silver plated, or can have plated in antique silver, and engrave.

I completely agree with Mark...There's no official rule I know of but it's a professional courtesy paid to fellow collectors...Like Mark says...after the auction it's fine...

There are no rules.

Potential buyers, who have already seen the auction, hate it.

Potential buyers, who would have missed the auction, love it.

Sellers love it.

Scott,
You obviously didn't do anything wrong, but I wanted to let you know before you paid the invoice, and then had to go through an ordeal to get a refund. The auction house really should have had a test run with liveauctioneers before selling such an expensive sports collection. Mark, here is a link to the auction:

So are you saying you already paid for the piece and have it in hand?

Yes, Ben. I sent Scott a private message too. I was at the auction, won the item, paid, and have it. It was not until last night before I went to sleep, that I saw Scott's post. Then I saw the live auction website that lists the winning bid for the bid under mine.

Wow.. That is not good. Great example, however, of why net54 is valuable and not just a stomping ground for crazies with agendas. Without this communication, Scott would have paid and it would have got really ugly. It also holds the auction joys accountable for their mistake. I feel bad, as you clearly do as well, for Scotty here. If I was the consigner, I would be pissed too as it no doubt cost them money(unless your two bids were both caps which I find very unlikely). It's too bad. Technology is great...only if you know how to use it.
