Joe, what did I tell you about encouraging people to collect Indianapolis cards?

Thanks all...

I have considered collecting 1889 Indianapolis players. With having the Rusie card already, it looks like it would be interesting to build, especially being from my hometown.

Well Ted, there is one Indy card that will prove difficult. John (z28jd) hoards Larry Corcoran; his 1887 cards being with Indy. John needs professional help, it's an unhealthy obsession. I'm sure no one has ever approached ~40 cards of the same player, pure insanity. One work around would be to stick to just the 1889 team as you posted.

muddymules,

Two questions:

1) Was your find recent?
2) Was it in Indy?

Living in central Indiana, I have been to some estate sales recently and asked if they had any baseball items. They all said no. I am going to be upset if the cards you found were at one of the sales I went to.

I have been hitting sales for a few years and always ask if they have anything. It's normally "I just sold everything I had" or "no". I found these about six months ago in Indy. I just wanted to do some research first and see what I had, before I posted the pictures. I've only been lucky twice, once was with these cards and another was a Sinclair Fuel Contest Babe Ruth Autographed baseball (which is still a debate on whether the ball is signed by Babe Ruth or his secretary at the time).

Now, if I collected late 1980's and early 1990's cards, I'd have enough firewood to last forever. That stuff lingers at practically ever sale. There is nothing worse than asking for vintage baseball items and the person brings out tubs of 1989 Donruss cards telling me they would like to keep them for their retirement and then asking me to make an offer. I normally just say "you probably better keep these and let them sit, maybe someday they'll be worth more money". I don't have the heart to tell them to set them on fire.

My philosophy is that it's better to stick to one team from a single year. If you just collect '89's then the collection will be more uniform and cohesive. Really, the 87's, 88's, and 89's ought to be treated as separate sets (as many folks here already know this is my opinion). An '89 Indy set would be a cool thing to complete. As for hoarding a certain player, not cool. Just my opinion.

Congrats and nice find.

I agree, hoarding isn't cool, but collecting one player is very cool. As for 1889 Indy cards, I have no objections there

I do have one player that I am trying collect every card, which is Hammerin' Hank Aaron. I have many of his cards and someday will have them all.

Glad that you're not after the 1889 Indy cards. I'm not sure if anyone else is either. I'm going to start looking into this more and see how it can come about.

Call it hoarding or call it collecting, but either way, I think that what you're doing is uncool.

If somone is passionate about a particular player and pays more than what the rest of the general populace is willing to pay, why is that uncool?

How is that any different from any other item up for auction?

It's because other people might want that card for their sets or subsets and can't get it because the person has bought every one they could get their hands on. Same goes for the T206 Titus. Just uncool, I think, not that it isn't perfectly legal within their rights to do so, just that it is also within my rights to say what I think.

Default Excellent Find!

There are some very rare and desirable players among what you found. That find is an excellent start to an Old Judge collection! Congrats!

Very cool find, Ted B. California Brown is an easy card, unless you want that pose. I think you should just collect what you like. I think it's just fine to collect n172 by player, and no problem at all if folks post that they disagree with that collecting style. Bottom line, if you want the card, keep bidding until they stop...

Thanks Joe. I do like the thoughts of the 1889 team. It looks like it would be fun to chase. I have done some research, but feel free to send me any knowledge you have for the 1889 Indianapolis Hoosiers. I love chasing history and the research is as fun.
