Raw or graded - need advice for Aaron collection

Recently I have been buying a lot of Aaron memorabilia produced between 1973-75. There was a plethora of wonderfully tacky Aaron memorabilia produced during that time that is both cheap and entertaining to stumble upon.

I have posted the "base" Topps Aaron cards I have. 57 and 55 are on the way. Last purchase will be the 54. I know these aren't the condition that many of you collect, but I am putting this collection together on a public school employee's budget so I am pretty happy with them. I also have all of the other Aaron Topps regular issue cards (leaders, all-stars, etc.) in similar condition, just didn't take the time to scan.

Great cards, and much better condition that almost everything in my collection. As far as grading, I am always a bit on the fence on the whole issue. I like the added protection when I spread out the cards and flip through them but hate the extra space the graded cards take out. If you have the storage space and feel like you would get more enjoyment out of them with that extra layer of protection, I see nothing wrong with sending them in. Then again, the money could go to extra cards.

Thanks. I just enjoy collecting so condition not a huge issue. I do avoid tears, paper loss, writing, pin holes, and heavy creases. I can pretty live with everything else. After reading the responses, I have about decided to keep them raw. I agree with you about the protection slabs provide. I keep each card in a penny sleeve, then a toploader, and finally a team bag. I think it provides pretty good protection.

Nice cards, I am envious.

I prefer storing most of my cards in Card Saver 1's. Those penny sleeves are always a pain in the butt and the cards don't stay secure in top loaders like they do in Card Saver 1's. This is just my opinion though.

Thanks. Growing up in Atlanta in the 1970s, Aaron was the face of Atlanta sports. He always was classy and I never forgot how he carried himself. He probably doesn't get the respect he deserves since he played in (at the time) smaller markets, but he continues to be a beloved figure here in Atlanta still today.

Nice cards Ed, but you will not be keeping them "raw ". You will be keeping them in their natural state....which is a good thing

Hank Aaron and Frank Robinson have to be two of the most under appreciated super stars in the history of baseball. I was 11 in 1974 and distinctly remember watching the game on TV on April 8th. It is one of my fondest childhood memories. I always loved Vin Scully's call of Aaron's 715th. It can be heard at the 55 second mark on the audio clip located below.

Our family drove down from NC several time during the early 1970's to watch the Braves play. Saw Hank hit a homer and Niekro pitch in the 2nd game of a doubleheader....great memories

Also, saw Denny McLain make his Atlanta debut (forget which year now).
