Default Vandy

I picked this up at last year's National in Chicago and it's still one of my favorites of 2013. This is an exceedingly rare pennant of Johnny Vander Meer circa 1938. My thought is that it was perhaps sold at the All Star Game in Cincinnati.

I'm not a huge pennant guy in my own collection, but I do love to look at them.

Hey, Scott - it would be cool if you could somehow prove your ASG hypothesis (e.g. find a photo match). What dimensions are that pennant? It looks like the proportions are a bit different than most pennants

The only two Giants pennants (that I know of) that show SEALS Stadium, rather than Candlestick. The only difference between the two is the font thickness. I have always called this the "cartoon font" and it later appeared on some really good looking 1960s pennants...

Rob,
I've thought that and I'm always looking for 1938 All Star Game photos for that reason. The dimensions of my pennant are 12" x 24". I'm not sure if that's unusual or not to be honest with you.

I just know I like it!

Never seen that Giants variation... wow!

I thought the Reds had a monopoly on that style (there are 2 other Reds variations, albeit not as rare as the one above).

Here is my contribution for the day...

Here's another look at that rare "Cinderella Boys" Pennant. This one is in really nice condition, and about as scarce as a 3 dollar bill...

It came from a 2002 Mastro Auction...

http://www.legendaryauctions.com/Lot...entoryid=21686

I was under-bidder, and am still stinging 12 years later. Until Rob posted above, I had not seen another one since...

One more thing and then I'll let you get back to work....

Mastro mentioned "only surviving example"....this blows my mind. In the grand scheme, 1951 is not that long ago. You would think this pennant was made in at least some kind of quantity...100s? 1000s? Where did they all go? 1951 was a pretty big deal for Giants fans...

I got mine for $85, shipping included, on eBay. Would you have bid, Mark, or do you have higher standards? if I see something Giants I don't have, I go for it...pretty much regardless of condition.

Default Double sided pennants

The only double sided pennant I've ever come across was a great Athletics pennant I saw at show in the Philly area. One side had Philadelphia Athletics, while the other side had Kansas City Athletics. Wish I would have picked it up.

Here is my favorite Eagles pennant: A circa 1933 or 34 yellow and blue variety.

Please post a picture of your $85 pennant.

Mark and Chris-

This was the Reds pennant that really reminded me of the next year's Giants. I think the Reds was recently in an ITPC auction.

Those dimensions are rather unusual...your pennant is 2:1, length to width...most "full size" or "3/4" pennants are closer to 3:1.

I'll make it my mission to find that 1938 ASG photo

edit: now that I've seen Mark's 1919 pennant, maybe the 3:1 ratio is more of a modern thing. Mark?

You need to find another Cubs, so you can display them side by side . That is an awesome pennant. Have you seen other double sideds?

Sorry I missed that... the 1919 Reds pennant is just standard full sized.

Scott's magnificent Vandy Pennant is a unique animal. Nothing quite like it, in terms of size or material (which is more of a cloth, than felt). Plus, it was originally attached to a stick in a unique way that really cannot be compared to anything else.

Hi, I'm new to the board. Longtime Giants fan and collector. On eBay, I go by unclebaseballmike, and have probably bought and sold from some of you guys over the years.

Long ago I wanted to create a piece that captured Bobby Thomson's moment from 1951. I found one of the "Cinderella Boys" pennants in an auction and added it to a few other elements. I hadn't seen one of these pennants before, but I didn't know it was so rare. I got lucky, it's in really nice shape. If I can figure out how to upload an image here, you'll be able to see the final result. (Because somebody will probably ask, I seem to remember the shop tucking the ties behind the pennant for framing purposes.) It's been one of my favorite Giants displays.

Mike has some great Giants stuff, based on the small sample I've seen. i have the same pennant in about 1/10th the condition. Please keep sharing, Mike! Do you still have those "things" (no spoiler alert) that are taller than you?

Default Giants Polo Grounds Stadium Sign

Rob,

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the Giants stadium sign I got in a 1994 Leland's auction. I was the only one who bid -- I was the only one who didn't stop to ask, "What will I do with a 32-foot-long tin sign?"

It sat for a decade in my garage. Once the Giants built a new stadium in 2000, I really thought it should be displayed there. In 2004 I traded with the Giants for a few things.

Sadly, it's 10 years later and they have yet to display the sign in the ballpark. I'll bet more people saw it in my garage.

I agree on the Notre Dame pennant. Very early and teens / twenties is right on.

In regards to the two sided Maryland / Hawks pennant, these are legit. I have sold a few over the years. I would say this is two different makers as the Hawks is an Adflag pennant or similar. Probably got the leftover Maryland cheap.

Lastly, that is a great Giants pennant. I love the detail.

Now it's my turn to agree...

That Giants Pennant is one of the very best. Great graphics, and kind of an Asian feel to the lettering. It has been theorized that this one was created for the 1913 World Tour, in which the Giants and White Sox visited Japan, China and the Phillipines (among other countries).

The player's uniform would certainly fit that timing. There's no way to prove or confirm it either way, but it would certainly make sense!

Default Browns after photos

Sprayed bleach and let sit for 90 seconds, then rinsed thoroughly with water using another spray bottle. Pretty easy and pleased with results. Now just need a nice orange spine.

Default Round 2

Didn't get quite as lucky with this one. It was way more soiled and I left the bleach on too long trying to remove the more stubborn stains. The red started to run. Even so, anything would be better than it's previous state.

Going to try to work on that black spot a little more, without touching the lettering if possible. Maybe try to bleach out the red that ran in that area. Then a spine transplant and call it a day.

Default Has anyone cleaned a flocked pennant?

Hey I am deciding on whether or not I want to clean a pennant I just purchased and remember seeing somewhere on here a conversation about cleaning pennants.

My pennant is a flocked pennant with airbrushed paint on the graphics. As far as I know, when the paint gets wet, it puts watermarks on it and ruins it. I am not as concerned with this portion, and would rather focus just on the white parts of the pennant.

Any suggestions?

Can you post a picture of the pennant? I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "flocked" and "airbrushed."

So the pennant is actually not in terrible shape, but it just seems a little dirtier than my others. The white border and red background are just felt (the 70/30 wool/rayon type) and then the "STANFORD" and all the indians are flocked onto the pennant. I think maybe you are familiar with "raised felt". The issue is that they are all flocked in white and then gone over with paint afterwords. That paint gets water damage (as seen on the Indian's right shoulder sitting atop of the "F")

I may not even worry about it, but if there is a safe way, I might go that route as well.

Thanks!

Default Tigers pennant.......Rare?

Guys............I picked this Tigers full size pennant up last week. The style of the Tiger logo matches the 1940's version in Mike Egner's book, but this version I have reads 'Mich.' instead of 'Tigers'. Is this a more scarce version? Thanks.......Matt

I'm guessing it's a travel pennant...the logo seemed to fit multiple genres.

Default Late 1960s Hockey Pennants

Hi All. Looking for a little help on some late 1960s hockey pennants I came across.

Do you think these are homemade from someone as an arts and crafts project or maybe they are prototypes? There is also a stick attached to each. I've been collecting hockey pennants for a long time and have never seen these. Material is felt. There were two of each of the Kings and Penguins as well. The Seals looks like someone wrote the date on it.

I've also attached two other Penguins pennants where you can see the font is the same. Penguins used that font from 1967 till almost late 70s. I have a 1967 Penguins pennant with that lettering.

Picked up this Phillies pennant. I'm unsure of its year but I suspect it is from 1943 because the Phillies logo resembles one used on a 1943 scorecard. It's not an exact match but it's close and that scorecard logo only appeared that year. New ownership switched to the Phillies Blue Jays in 1944 then settled on a shorter-looking wordmark in the 1950's and '60's.
