Hi, I'm new to the board. Longtime Giants fan and collector. On eBay, I go by unclebaseballmike, and have probably bought and sold from some of you guys over the years.

Long ago I wanted to create a piece that captured Bobby Thomson's moment from 1951. I found one of the "Cinderella Boys" pennants in an auction and added it to a few other elements. I hadn't seen one of these pennants before, but I didn't know it was so rare. I got lucky, it's in really nice shape. If I can figure out how to upload an image here, you'll be able to see the final result. (Because somebody will probably ask, I seem to remember the shop tucking the ties behind the pennant for framing purposes.) It's been one of my favorite Giants displays.

I'm fairly sure "Collegiate of Ames" was a store in Ames, Iowa that made and sold collegiate items as pennants, tee-shirts, etc.

Mike has some great Giants stuff, based on the small sample I've seen. i have the same pennant in about 1/10th the condition. Please keep sharing, Mike! Do you still have those "things" (no spoiler alert) that are taller than you?

Default Giants Polo Grounds Stadium Sign

Rob,

I'm pretty sure you're talking about the Giants stadium sign I got in a 1994 Leland's auction. I was the only one who bid -- I was the only one who didn't stop to ask, "What will I do with a 32-foot-long tin sign?"

It sat for a decade in my garage. Once the Giants built a new stadium in 2000, I really thought it should be displayed there. In 2004 I traded with the Giants for a few things.

Sadly, it's 10 years later and they have yet to display the sign in the ballpark. I'll bet more people saw it in my garage.

Mike,
Wow, that's too funny! I love it!

When the Texas Rangers tore down old Arlington Stadium, there was a 20' x 8' mural of Ryan that hung on the outside of the stadium. I wanted to buy that damn thing when it came up for sale because it was so cool. I just couldn't pull the trigger because I never was able to figure out where I could display it.

Congrats on taking the leap to own it for a while, even if you did let cooler heads prevail.

That's what I had in mind.

If you don't want to say, I would totally understand, but I'm wondering what "few things" the Giants gave you in trade...

Default Trading with the Giants

Rob,

I was gratified to see the Polo Grounds sign used for the 1954 Giants 50th Anniversary Reunion.

The first things I asked the Giants for was a Crazy Crab "game used" costume, and a Barry Bonds game used bat. They said no to both. As I remember, I received an AT&T stadium chair, 2002 WS game used base, SF Giants 40th Anniversary Yearbook original artwork, a couple autographs, and on-field batting practice for me and my brother-in-law. Not bad, and I really wanted the Giants to have the stadium sign.

I seriously downsized the collection about 5 years ago, and many of these things are in other guys' collections now.

Nice pennants, Fballguy. I grew up in Ohio (1955-1977) and I have never been aware of the Cleveland Rams!

I agree on the Notre Dame pennant. Very early and teens / twenties is right on.

In regards to the two sided Maryland / Hawks pennant, these are legit. I have sold a few over the years. I would say this is two different makers as the Hawks is an Adflag pennant or similar. Probably got the leftover Maryland cheap.

Lastly, that is a great Giants pennant. I love the detail.

Now it's my turn to agree...

That Giants Pennant is one of the very best. Great graphics, and kind of an Asian feel to the lettering. It has been theorized that this one was created for the 1913 World Tour, in which the Giants and White Sox visited Japan, China and the Phillipines (among other countries).

The player's uniform would certainly fit that timing. There's no way to prove or confirm it either way, but it would certainly make sense!

Default Browns after photos

Sprayed bleach and let sit for 90 seconds, then rinsed thoroughly with water using another spray bottle. Pretty easy and pleased with results. Now just need a nice orange spine.

Default Round 2

Didn't get quite as lucky with this one. It was way more soiled and I left the bleach on too long trying to remove the more stubborn stains. The red started to run. Even so, anything would be better than it's previous state.

Going to try to work on that black spot a little more, without touching the lettering if possible. Maybe try to bleach out the red that ran in that area. Then a spine transplant and call it a day.

Told you so! You gotta hang it vertically, point down and tape off the spine. Looks like you may have gotten some bleach on the Giants spine

Default Has anyone cleaned a flocked pennant?

Hey I am deciding on whether or not I want to clean a pennant I just purchased and remember seeing somewhere on here a conversation about cleaning pennants.

My pennant is a flocked pennant with airbrushed paint on the graphics. As far as I know, when the paint gets wet, it puts watermarks on it and ruins it. I am not as concerned with this portion, and would rather focus just on the white parts of the pennant.

Any suggestions?

Can you post a picture of the pennant? I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "flocked" and "airbrushed."

So the pennant is actually not in terrible shape, but it just seems a little dirtier than my others. The white border and red background are just felt (the 70/30 wool/rayon type) and then the "STANFORD" and all the indians are flocked onto the pennant. I think maybe you are familiar with "raised felt". The issue is that they are all flocked in white and then gone over with paint afterwords. That paint gets water damage (as seen on the Indian's right shoulder sitting atop of the "F")

I may not even worry about it, but if there is a safe way, I might go that route as well.

Thanks!

That's beautiful. I wouldn't touch it. The patina does not detract from it's appeal at all in my opinion. Wouldn't risk it.

How old is that? Have any others?

Default Tigers pennant.......Rare?

Guys............I picked this Tigers full size pennant up last week. The style of the Tiger logo matches the 1940's version in Mike Egner's book, but this version I have reads 'Mich.' instead of 'Tigers'. Is this a more scarce version? Thanks.......Matt

I'm guessing it's a travel pennant...the logo seemed to fit multiple genres.

Default Late 1960s Hockey Pennants

Hi All. Looking for a little help on some late 1960s hockey pennants I came across.

Do you think these are homemade from someone as an arts and crafts project or maybe they are prototypes? There is also a stick attached to each. I've been collecting hockey pennants for a long time and have never seen these. Material is felt. There were two of each of the Kings and Penguins as well. The Seals looks like someone wrote the date on it.

I've also attached two other Penguins pennants where you can see the font is the same. Penguins used that font from 1967 till almost late 70s. I have a 1967 Penguins pennant with that lettering.

I don't think these are home made, just very rare. I seem to remember seeing something like this many years ago. I don’t really buyor sell mini pennants so I don’t recall the exact details. I think these are just cheaply made from the same era as the others shown that are much more common.

Picked up this Phillies pennant. I'm unsure of its year but I suspect it is from 1943 because the Phillies logo resembles one used on a 1943 scorecard. It's not an exact match but it's close and that scorecard logo only appeared that year. New ownership switched to the Phillies Blue Jays in 1944 then settled on a shorter-looking wordmark in the 1950's and '60's.

I would have guessed mid 40’s to early 50’s if you asked for a time period estimate. I believe there was a series of full sized that match this style. I don’t recall seeing this exact style, but I’m not much of a Phillies watcher.

First: awesome pennant! I am exclusively a pennant collector in the heart of Phillies country, and I've never seen this before. (So if you ever want to trade/sell …. )

Now when I saw this the first pennant that came to mind was this one from the 1969 Trench series … the city name is not a perfect match in font but very, very close, about as close as "Phillies" is to that in the yearbook. Obviously yours is older.

But I'm gonna take an educated guess though and say early-mid 60s. Looks a lot like a Keezer pennant, by the style of tassels. There are two other Keezer Phillies from earlier years, though … if this is a third that would be unusual. Now it's hard to see in the picture, but the white strip … is there only one row/line of stitching, as opposed to two? If it's just one down the middle, as it appears, then I will definitely say early-mid 60s, as I have a couple similar pennants with that rare stitch pattern and one of them is an LA Angels pennant. This is rare in that you're supposed to be able to slide a dowel inside that strip, but for these pennant the stitching makes it impossible. I'll have to dig it up …

Interesting information. I did notice the unusual single row of zig-zag stitching. I'd like to see the other pennants you're comparing it to. If it's from the 1960's, it's pretty oddball graphically.

Here ya go. Turns out I have three from this series. Very unique. I like the simple designs. Also including a pic of some of my Phillies pennants, the two on the second row from bottom are both Keezer pennants.

the date is on the pennant by the MLB logo 1969

As a side note, that's the date of the trademark and it has been applied to pennants from the early 70s. NFL pennants (also Trench?) have 1967 dated trademark used for at least 3-5 years beyond.

This white Phillies one is highly likely to be from 1969 as it is cloth, not felt, and of the same style as a Seattle Pilots I own.

^^^^ Nice!

I really like the lower two. Here's a Giants pennant (that I don't have )....it is very similar to your Reds example and one year removed. I wonder if the company did similars in 1960, 1963, etc....
