Funny the way his Old Judge, and Allen & Ginter cards always sell for a premium.

The other Jack Dempsey was a LEGENDARY figure in American history. There are many, many, MANY well respected top fighters in card sets from the late 19th/early 20th century that do not command the premium that his cards command. I believe that would be the legendary Jack Dempsey lol |

Dave,
Judging by your avatar, you are likely MUCH more knowledgeable about boxing and boxing cards than I am. Am I imagining that premium on the 19th century Jack Dempsey cards as if he was the "other" Jack Dempsey? Last edited by slipk1068; 05-07-2014 at 04:09 PM. |

Auction house mistakes aside, and believe or not, this is a very common mistake, the name obviously doesn't hurt the value of his cards. However, he shouldn't be classified as a common either. Obviously John L. is the king of this era as far as collectors go, but "Non-Pariel" Dempsey stuff should probably be in the next level down with the Bob Fitzsimmons, Peter Jacksons, George Dixon's, George Godfrey and Corbetts of the world. ...................and when I say "Corbett", I don't mean Young Corbett I, or Young Corbett II, or even Young Corbett III..........and when I say "George Godfrey", I don't mean the genial 1920's-30's Heavyweight who sparred with Jack Dempsey, and turned Primo Carnera into a whithering little boy on the canvas, with a low blow, during a bout he was supposed to throw, so figured he'd go out in style, while saving as much face as possible. .......and when I say Peter Jacks..................ah, you get it. It does get confusing, and there are a ton of shared names in the sport... many between equally good (or close to it) fighters. |
