For what it's worth, IMO the blue background not only looks indistinct where it edges the gold, but it gives the appearance of the blue overlaying the gold edges rather than the card resting on a blue background.

No matter how flat the card is, scanners are very sensitive and there should be even some small iota of depth, a slight shadow cast by the card on the background, on at least one dimension.

In this case, IMO, it looks as though photoshop was used to clean up the using the blue to do it, thereby giving the card a smaller appearance. It may not be trimmed. It just appears as such because of an extra pixel line of blue here and there to cleanly frame the card.
