Chris- Rector is from my hometown. He ran track while a student at the University of Virginia.
In the London Olympics in 1908 he set the world record in the 100 meters in the semi-finals. That afternoon a South African runner asked him for a lesson on how to use starting blocks. The next day the South African edged him for the gold medal and broke his world record using blocks. Rector went on the become a Federal Judge in St. Louis.
