Player Collections - Show them off
The Dodgers thread inspired me to take out, flip through, and take an updated photo of my Mantle collection today, which is now 95% complete. Here it is:
Would love to see some other player collections if anyone wants to post.

I knew you had a freaky collection, but now see some items i missed before.
Ever thought about posting them (one-by-one) in the Net54 Album -under userCP. I enjoy looking at what the community collects? or providing a link to a site that we can see them indiviually is what i am saying. Everytime i talk to ya, i cant figure what cards your missing bro.

I guess I must have still been on a sugar high--took me 13 seconds to spot the '52 Topps, but a tsch less to spot your Stahl-Meyers!
Chris, now I know what you've been up to all weekend! You know, Lionel Carter favored using scrapbooks to mount his cards. Perhaps try making a chronological run of your Mantle collection mounted in thick black paper scrapbooks using the gummed black art corners. You could use various kinds of mylar and poly sleeves, snugs, semi-hard holders to protect the card or photo, while giving each piece its own space of display and "room to breathe" among the others. You could research each piece, providing its own identification and background story of the set from whence it came, as well as how you acquired it (though this last item may be only of interest to yourself, and your heirs). Just a thought, my friend. This would make them easier to enjoy viewing, still one at a time, with each item having its own page or even two-page spread. After all, you ARE a Mickey Mantle specialist. The scrapbooks would even make for an easy guided tour to your collection, and you could then still select what you wish to show your guest. As for the cards that are TPGed; well, there are three-ring devices that hold cards, but it would obviously have to be thought through carefully. It can be done. Lionel used to remove every other sheet from his scrapbooks to allow enough room for the thickness of the cards and the mounts, so as to prevent the scrapbooks from fanning out. Anyway, just my 50 cents worth of advice. Hope you're able to get every Mantle back without a ......... . Take care, my friend. Chris,
My Aaron collection is nowhere as extensive as your Mick, but I have obtained several items this year so I am getting there. Sorry for the bad pic. |

You guys are funny. I should have put the 52 Topps in different places to make it a little more difficult. You have a great eye Brian. I can find the 53 Stahl Meyers but cannot find the 55 anywhere in the picture.
At some point, I would love to do an album of some kind. I keep most of my collection in a fire safe but I think an online album would be a good idea. I have a private Photo Bucket account for insurance purposes but should take the extra step to organize it and label everything. Thank you all for the kind words. I love the history behind each card and the thought of some excited fan pulling it out of the pack (and, in the case of my collection, sometimes tacking it to the wall or sticking it into the bike spokes). I love the Aaron run. Any favorite?

Not to detract this thread from the original intent but one suggestion to "display" your collection safely and securely without pulling everything out is to do high quality scans of everything and then print them in a photo book. You could get one in larger format to make one killer coffee table book to peruse through. Each page could be front and back of the card with a write up like Brian mentioned. It would take some time and work but I think it would end up pretty cool. You could use the photo in the original post as your cover shot.
Just a thought. Drew

Holy crap!! That's the most insane pile of Mantle cards I've ever seen. Congrats on building such a great collection. Wow, I took nearly a minute to find the 1952 Topps...it would be funny if N54 did a Where's Waldo book where each page was one of our Player Collections and the "waldo" was a specific card we called out. Okay, I'm heading upstairs for a pic of my Aaron collection...

I love the Aaron and Newton collections. Those displays are incredibly well done.
Thank you all for the nice comments. And, Dan, I do have a dog. I think it took her about a minute to find the 311 as well, so don't feel bad As weird as it is, she actually has her own card collection--early 1900s Westie tobacco cards (I was shocked to learn that they even existed but thought it would be fun to build a collection "for her").

Chris - great collection. It took me several minutes to find #311. But in my defense, I spent a lot of time going, "Oh, the 6" x 9" Dormand, I need that. The Exhibit portrait, I need that." And on that went until I finally saw the 311, and yes, I still need that also. Along with any pre-1954 baseball cards, all the Bazooka cards, and the Stahl-Meyer cards, etc. One thing I noticed that was missing is the Mickey Mantle Big League Baseball game, although I did see a playing card from it and I think the picture from it. I think the game board itself would make a nice exhibit and if you have it, it should be included in your Mantle group photo. If you throw out the drawers on the left, you'd have room for it.
Jason - very nice Hammerin' Hank collection. Also a great display set-up. It looks very nice. Plus, kudos for the physicists display/collection and having a child interested in that. The future needs more kids like that. |

Chris, I hope your Westie has more control over her spending habits than mine does when it comes to buying cards. Cards show up in the mail, the wife starts asking questions, and I show her a picture of Friday ( Westie ) in front of the laptop with paws on the keyboard. The wife was not amused....

One set I don't see in your Aarons are the Nu-Card Scoops and Hi-lites from 1960 and 1961. The 1961 in particular is very inexpensive and features what Aaron would probably consider the highlight of his career.

A small part of my Clemente collection
A few of the rarer not often seen Clemente items - Super rare 1958 Kahns, The 1962, 1967 and 1968 Venezuelans are the highest graded copies. The '67 is exquisitely rare in any grade.

There are a few pre-1980 items in this pile of stuff I photographed for a post over at FCB awhile back. That thread was about non-card stuff, so this is most of the non-card portion of my Dave Winfield collection.
It baffles me that there isn't a single Yankees bobblehead of Dave Winfield. I know he and Steinbrenner didn't get along, but it's not like they cut ties or anything. Last edited by DaClyde; 03-24-2015 at 10:19 AM. |

Chris----I loved the photo you did with your dog "admiring" your 1952 T. Mantle. That was an inspiration.
Jason---Congrats on a wonderful Hank Aaron collection, bro. Don't be surprised if you decide to add another display case. One thing about player collecting; it's hard to limit yourself. I always respected Hank Aaron. I came to almost resent him in the early 70s. It wasn't too hard to "get over" Hank beatin' the Babe's record. Nah, it was because he always seemed to murder my Cubs. Every stinkin' game it seemed. Like Bugs said in his baseball cartoon where he faced the rough Gashouse Gorillas, "Wham--a homer, wham, another homer, wham, wham, wham, wh....." When Mr. Aaron finally left the National League, the relief never came. Another slugger had already begun to take his place to have the Cubs for lunch---Mike Schmidt. With Ernie retired, Ron Santo aging and traded, and Billy Williams soon to go to the A's, and Fergie Jenkins to Texas in another stupid trade by Cubs management, it was all over for me as a Cubs fan. Anyway, kudos to your Henry Aaron collection. Long may his record last. We certainly cannot acknowledge Rotten Berry Bogus Bonds. I know; I'm gettin' mouthy. I gotta eat and head to work anyway. Take care, guys. ----Brian Powell |

Great Displays everyone. I posted a display case i had a while back that had some good ones. I love the Hank Aaron display, always like the RC (love mine for sure!). As for the Yogi Berra, i like to see getting one of those tip-top cards one day.
@Chris: I am very happy that we chat alot as good bros and was fortunate for you to grab some Mantle items i sold you. I did notice the 2 micks 52's, but only saw 1 stalh meyer, I thought you got the yellow one, think its the 55 or did i miss it. You sure did a-mass more than i ever could do. I did my run and some other issues, but felt there was more out there to collect. May the qwest for that 60 Venez continue on. Also, please update your need list, if i remember the Meadowgold was still on it and that Holiday Inn pool 3-fold postcard. BTW- what an adorable dog. You got some balls to put that 52 in its mouth, my dog would of ran and buried it somewhere. Reminds me to take a pic of my dog for fun. Maybe we all can start a dog calandar with our 52 micks and our dogs or our fav players. I got my collection put on here on the Net54 album section. I sold my Zeenut pre-rookie Dimaggio to another board member. I may be doing a 4 card Ty Cobb run very soon. And when i do it, i think i will do a custom 4 card display.

Guys, this is a great thread. Mostly I have just bought cards and never even thought of a display like this. I don't want to hijack the thread, but I do have some questions. I am starting to get interested in collecting original vintage pinbacks and making displays out of them. This may be a dumb question, but how do you get the pinbacks to stay in place in the display? Do you put felt or something in the bottom of your display case and run the pins through the felt? Some of these displays really got me thinking about building some similar displays. Also, is there any kind of price guide for pinbacks? Thanks for any advice you can throw my way.

Sorry for the delay in responding. It's an unissued 1968 Topps proof of Seaver, missing the black ink. Note that he's pitching left handed. I guess he was trying to fool the photographers but someone at Topps figured out what was going on before the card was issued. I wish I could find one with all of the ink colors on it.

Thanks Brian and Chris. Chris, I am down to only a few left. Right now, I am missing the 60 and 68 Venezuelan, a 1969 Country Cooking postcard of Mantle batting, and the Holiday Inn postcard of the pool (not the fountain). After I get those out of the way, I'd love to get the Meadowgold Dairy, the 1954 Stahl Meyer (my 53 and 55 are pictured about two cards away from the 52 Topps in the picture), a couple of postcards (55 Exhibit, another Pittsburgh Exhibit, Dad's Cookies, Lenox Hospital), and a handful of cards I've never even seen pictures of.
For pins, I am lazy myself and just lay them on a shelf. I'd image sticking them to felt would work well though. Love the displays.

Hi Raymond, if you look at the picture, there is a big orange stamp book towards two or three cards over from the 52 Topps. The 55 Bowman is touching the bottom of that booklet. It is a bit difficult to see as there is a little glare off the case. Would love to see your collection.

Do you also collect the newer 'tribute-type' cards of Mantle or just the vintage?

The 1969 is a miscut and pictures part of Mantle's bat in the very lower portion, so it made its way in. Right now, just the career contemporary cards. I do have a couple of others but am not actively pursuing anything past 1969.

I still think it's as gorgeous as can be! and definitely a rarer "oc" version than what I have ever seen.
and just realized that 66 was an opc and very well centered! edited on the 53: it's also exhibits that lower left hand corner wear that I was referring to. I don't know if its just me, but for some reason that corner always seems to endure the most wear or more wear in comparison to the other 3. honestly cant think of another card that this "theory" applies more....
