Just finished my first national experience Thursday and Friday

Gotta say it was a great time. I picked up a few t206 back stamps , passed on a few also . Most everyone was very friendly only had a couple of dealers that were less than friendly. Added a couple of t207's that I needed.

I don't recall seeing any Oxford confectionaries, t227 cobbs, low grade cracker jacks. Although I was focusing on "stacks of t206's".

It was a challenge for me to walk the whole show in 2 days.

Johnny you are right the only t206 scrap I recall seeing was Leon's multi strike.

I was disappointed that I didn't grab any t205 commons. I was actively looking for them but never found any even remotely close to the price at which I've purchased 8 on eBay the last 2 weeks.

I did find a new interest in topps coins and seeing a lot of post war regional issues and topps non-base sets made me want to list Al Richters collection as one of the top three I'd like to see.

I'm slamming a couple of Stiegls now in prep for "double fisting corona's " ( as Leon put it) at the net54 dinner- which I hope tops off a great 2 days- so excuse the "stream of conciousness report.

In summary I had a great time and recommend the national to any card collector who hasn't been!

Glad you all enjoyed the video. Not all pre-War related but here is a link to numerous National-related stories: http://www.sportscollectorsdaily.com...-convention-2/

I had a great time today in my one day at the National. Although I didn't plan it that way, my entire card haul consisted of T206s (all raw, of course) on which I got some pretty good deals. They included five HOFers (all three Matty bought as a lot, see below, and two of the Mordecai Browns), four Southern Leaguers, a Piedmont Factory 42 (thanks, Ted Z!), a Tolstoi, an Old Mill, and three very nice-looking commons at very reasonable prices. I also got a big stack of VCBC magazines and a couple of books from Wildfireschulte. In addition to him and Ted Z., I got to chat with numerous other Net54 denizens, on the show floor as well as at the dinner. They included Frank Burkett, Ed Hans, Jay Miller, Leon, Rhett Yeakley, Mac Wubben, Jobu (aka Bryan), Steve D, and others. Thanks, everybody!

Kevin, I made it by a couple of times, but each time you were literally surrounded! I did speak to a young man (your son?) who was helping you. Business must have been good!! I had a great time. Several hours disappeared in a hurry!

Default Scrap

I didn't see any scrap, but then again, I wasn't really looking for it. I wish I had been thinking about that, but I think I would have picked up on it if I had run across one.

Default Anyone notice SGC

Wish I was there, sounds like a blast!

Anyone notice or talk about the price difference/demand between SGC and PSA for major and semi-major cards?

Man im sorry bud!!! Yeah it got pretty busy at the show. Its crazy how much this photo hobby is growing over the past few years. Yeah that was my nephew and my father that I brought to the show. This was my nephews second show and Ive been trying to get him excited about the hobby. I think he caught the bug especially since he is already telling us that he is setting up in Atlantic City with us! Lol...

Wow that was a long drive for yall!!! We drove from Dallas but luckily split it up into 2 days. We stop and the stay the night in Springfield, Il. If you ever drive back to Chicago You should check out Springfield. There is a Hilton hotel that is right next to Abraham Lincoln's house that he grew up in not to mention a pretty cool Lincoln museum! Well Im sorry we didnt get to meet in person I would of loved to have said Hi and provided you with some info on the photos since its a new hobby. Thanks again though for trying.

This was my first extended National and I was able to pick up some cool pieces for my Jack Johnson collection.

Pumped for Atlantic City next year (though considering the hammering I took at the local casino in just an hour, it may not go too good).

I had a Twilight Zone moment on the trip home. I boarded my plane at O'Hare early Saturday, and while seated, watching the other passengers load, I got an email from Expedia, "Your flight has been cancelled." I was trying to figure out if it was a sign and I was supposed to get off the plane. Was I on an episode of Lost? Kinda made what little hair I have stand up. Made it home alive!

Thanks again - see you next year!

I found 2 dealers with t205s that I thought were very fair. I ended up buying a big stack for my wife. I even bought a t206 for myself. It was a great show. What grade of t205 s were you looking for?

Fair to good grade. I'm not saying they weren't fair prices. I only recently decided to work on completing my set ( already have the hofers, just decided to go for the commons as well) and I gave myself a $$ limit per card. Almost all the fair/good commons started at twice what I had seen on eBay . There were one or two dealers who weren't a lot higher than my limit but I wasn't in the mood to ask for a discount and still be paying my max price .

I even told a couple of dealers that their prices seemed to be in line with everyone else and I may need to raise my self imposed limit.

I have all of one T-206, bought on a whim at an antique store years ago for $10-$12, I'm fighting the urge. There are so many cool vintage pre-war cards. I may pick up one or two here and there someday just to have examples but I'm fighting off the urge, I light candles, chant and burn incense to chase away the impulse to delve into complete obsession in compiling sets...that's Jim Jones craziness.

I'm not very knowledgeable on the really old stuff but it seemed to me there was enough of it around to satisfy any collector seeking any condition, amazing collections really. As for prices, I don't know if they were good or not but I negotiated on everything I purchased. I'm not sure about the pre-war market.

Have to add; I also picked up four signed B/W photos, 1934 Ray Berres Brooklyn Dodger photograph from Wide World, ( my wife, a nurse, took care of him a couple times, said he was the nicest guy, told great stories), a Cubs 1950's Hank Sauer, Dee Fondy, Phil Cavarretta, Ted Lyons signed in ink pen, a Berra/Larsen 1956 World Series perfect game photo. I'll frame them and hang them up in the baseball part of my finished basement.

Any Negro League Baseball stuff? I know there were plenty of T206's, aren't they at every single show throughout the country?

Hey Johnny,

I picked up four yellow/browns that I'm sure you'll recognize (check out the pictures in the August pickup thread)...other than that, I didn't really see any scraps.

Dan McKee had a blank back T206, but honestly, I can't recall who it was...it was packed in with a bunch of other interesting stuff.

Cheers,
Steve

Phil,

I picked up a few Negro League items at the show. A 1940 Ethiopian Clowns broadside and a 1954 Edmonton team photo with Leon Day on it. Those were the only items I saw, except for some booth way back in the far corner that looked like it might have had some Negro League material, but no one was ever in the booth, so I doubt you'd have been able to buy any of it, even if you attended the show. See you in Atlantic City?

Thanks for the update, Ryan. I just relocated from NJ to Florida in June so I won't be making the trip back to AC next year. Talk about poor timing, right?

Not only that but the "National" for ice cream collectibles fanatics took place in Eastern PA two weeks after I moved from NJ, which was about a two hour drive from where I lived. Missed it the previous two years due to health issues and work commitments. I won't be making the trip back to PA next June for that one either as it is always held at the same location.

Maybe one of these days/years, timing will be right for me..........

I was shocked to pick up the 1944 "Negro Baseball" yearbook with Ray Brown of the Homestead Grays on the cover for $75 in great condition. Didn't notice much NL material in the room.

Well, having traveled on Amtrak from LA-Chicago and back to attend the show - I just got back yesterday!

I did pick up 12 N172s including the last Brown's Champ I needed from Jay Miller. Of course I could have just driven the two miles to Jay's house at any time in the past year and saved myself the trip . . .

I also picked up about 150 1959 Topps baseball. 59 Topps were the first packs I ever bought at the drug store so I finally decided to complete the set. I still need about 70 more cards. Some images to follow asap.
