How anyone could ever authenticate a Greg Maddux autograph short of watching him sign it escapes me. He should have been a doctor............

Did you crack a 9 out to get that or submit in the holder? How many 9s did you send in to get the 10?

That was in the back of my mind too. What was the card graded prior to being awarded a 10. I have become too much of a skeptic with extremely high graded cards, especially when the card is resubmitted and lands a 10. Really ? If you're a big player with the PSA registry, looks like PSA payed it forward to you. I'm curious what was seen in the card THIS time around that wasn't seen previously.

anyways, will be glad to answer all the questions in full so that there are no negative thoughts in how it was bumped... a. nolan ryan is my guy. and really just stick to the basic topps run, however i have several basic topps sets. b. i don't consider myself a "big player" at all. so i don't think they paid it forward at all and i certainly don't have a direct red phoned line to joe o. c. most importantly, it wasn't a crack out at all. again, i stick to the basic topps sets and over the course of 5 years or so, i managed to buy 6 psa 9s and 1 sgc 98/10. with all that being said, i figured the best strategy in attempting to bump was to simply send them all in under review and hope that one stood out from the rest and honestly and naturally one did. i personally think it's a brilliant strategy that i will be utilizing from here on out and don't mind sharing. if ya see previous posts, i am a psa guy vs sgc, but in no way find them to be a perfect company. the brand is certainly better both in volume of subs and sales of comparable grades but they've also made some serious mistakes in the past in which they seem to be learning from but again, in no way am i advertising for them or stating all hail psa. anyways, that's pretty much the story and happy to answer any other questions. i'm as open as a book. |

One has to really love and want the 9s in question, to buy a bunch of them seeking a 10 on a review of all of them. It also is pricey to review a bunch of expensive 9s, which one has to take into account.
So if one already has the group of 9s or genuinely wants to keep them, that's one thing. But most collectors might be hesitant to commit the resources to a cluster of examples of one expensive card, and then the additional cost of the review process. If the 10 doesn't hit, what does one then do, sell them all but one favorite, likely taking a loss with commissions and fees, if the sales are short term? Even if the 10 is hit, depending on the value, and how many 9s are in question, and their value, selling the now superfluous 9s may really eat into the profit of that 10. In sum there are many variables, with respect to each collector's specific goals and resources. |

and more than happy to address those variables, matt:
i have 5 basic topps ryan sets. Quote:
the buy prices on my 9s have ranged from $800 - $1200. naturally this is over the course of 5 or so years. haven't bought a 9 in the past 8 months however 9s seem to be fetching $2K these days. again i'm not a dealer or a speculator. they are in my collection and even though the last 10 went for 40k, i'm not cashing in on this one. she's been tucked away. even if one didn't cross and/or was in it for the flip/money, a case could certainly be made for sticking w/ this process as well. buy, hold, attempt to cross and still quite a bundle to be made either way. again, to each their own but even if the 10 didn't hit, it's a win-win scenario. |

Surprise pick up at lunch today. (Sorry for big pic). Lower grade, but the price was right. Decent centering. Very slowly but surely working on '57.

Nice pick up. In the collecting world I live in, that is definitely not "lower grade". I would take cards like that in a heartbeat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Very nice Mantles. That 60 is especially noteworthy for the lack of PD, the focus of the main picture, the batting Mick also doesn't have that "caved in" face thing that many have due to registration issues-- and of course the centering. Well done on that pickup!
Saw a centered 74 Schmidt with no PD and had to jump all over it last night on eBay. Last edited by MattyC; 09-16-2015 at 05:33 PM. |
