I am shocked that any strike out records exist from that long ago. 100 years ago, everyone was a contact hitter and strikeouts were low. The last 50+ years, players have been chasing HRs and they don't care about Ks.

I was curious who held the Cubs mark. It's Bill Hutchinson, who set the team mark of 314 in 1892. I guess not everyone could catch up to Bill's heater even in the contact hitter days. It also doesn't hurt when you have 67 CGs...

Fergie Jenkins is the closest modern pitcher to the Cubs record.

Strikeouts have become such a small deal now that they don't even list them in BaseballAmerica Prospect Reports or on the back of new Baseball Cards.

As a Braves' fan, 2014 shows the reality of the effect of too many strikeouts:

The only way that team could score at all was over the fence - no wonder they had to clear house.

I think (and hope) that strikeouts will soon, once again, become something to be avoided. And I hope that pull hitters again learn to hit to the opposite field instead of always hitting into the shifts - the very notion of 'outlawing' shifts is about the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of.

It's largely because those guys threw 400-450+ innings... or more-- see Hoss Radbourn. Their K's/9 innings don't come close to modern era power guys like Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens... even Greg Maddux had a higher K rate than most of the older guys.
