I was at the Philly Show today and picked up a few cards. Two of them were Pre-War, so I shall post them on that side of the board. The other two are shown here.
1. Johnny Bench Rookie One of several cards I picked up lately that I have been chasing (even if only in my subconscious) since childhood. It always seemed just out of reach...until today. For those who may be wondering, it is a PSA 5. The holder is inconsequential to me, though. The card presents nicely, and shows (in my opinion) the best catcher the game has ever seen, before any of us knew how great he would become. 2. 1952 Topps Connie Ryan I recently picked up a few '52 Topps cards, including Richie Ashburn. On the way out of the show today, I spent the last few bucks in my pocket on this card. The '52 Topps are beautiful, in my opinion, and I believe they are the Post-War equivalent of T206. I will definitely be putting together the Phillies team set, even if the high numbers take a little while. For those who care to know, this example is a PSA 4.5

Been a good month, with some Prewar cards, but also some good solid Postwar/Modern stuff too.
Thanks to fellow Net54'ers for some of these pickups, with the rest mostly via eBay. Really pleased with the centering on the Jordan and Gretzky rookies, both of which can be tough. A good solid month looking back

That is exactly my philosophy as well. My focus will always be on vintage baseball, but the idea of having the truly key cards from other sports in my collection is attractive, too. On the Gretzky, I'm very glad I picked up the Topps version as opposed to the OPC -- In no parallel universe could I justify spending 3x more for the card, just to have the Canadian version. To each his own though. And I definitely don't want to start a debate on the relative merits of Canadian cardboard...

Thanks, Andrew. I'm happy with them, and especially glad that neither one broke the bank.

technically a july pick up but just got back from psa. absolutely love this card for the back:
![]() ![]() normally these are blank backed stickers however this one was in the album and removed... upon plucking it someone inadvertently removed some of the album, which means on the reverse/opposite side of the album paper it had "hecho en venezuela" which is what is normally written on other regular topps veni cards. have seen a baker's dozen or so of these, but it's the first w/ this type of added bonus some might view this as an eye sore and almost certainly hurt the technical grade , but I personally think it makes the card! |

Beautiful. About six months ago, I picked up that same card as my first Robinson card.
It's great too oooh and aaah over PSA 8's and 9's, but I find it's even better for someone to be "super excited to add my first Jackie Robinson card". Collecting for the love of actually owning something, regardless of the potential payback, is admirable. Congrats... |
