Vander Meer 1938 snapshot
Here is a cool recent snapshot pickup with some historical content:
This snapshot was taken of Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer and his father (wearing the boater hat) standing out in front of the Sinton Hotel in Cincinnati on July 5th, 1938. Vandy was the starting and winning pitcher for the National League in the 1938 All Star game the following day on July 6th. Rookie LHP Vander Meer did not allow any runs and only 1 hit in 3 IP, in front of a sellout hometown crowd as the Cincinnati Reds hosted the midsummer classic in '38. The caption on the back of the snapper says it all. Vander Meer had just pitched his back-to-back no-no's less than a month earlier. He definitely was the talk of the town in 1938 at age 23...
