Thanks for your kind words. I bought my 5 matchbooks raw at a show for $2 each. I passed on other colors that were in worse condition. That same dealer had the kielbasa labels. And the next time I went to that show I bought the Penn Emblem patch from him.

I think that about does it for truly oddball Yaz items. I have a bunch of pins and food discs and such, but nothing as unusual as what I've already posted.

very cool! if ya end up finding some one day, lemme know. would definitely be interested in seeing/purchasing one.

actually found this while trying to research and figure out where this came from. it was $5 shipped and figured I couldn't go wrong considering it's still in oem packaging. who knows. it could take off one day w/ how crazy jordan collectors can be. it's actually a nice compliment to it....

love that it says "best if used by jan 2005"

The first is a self explanatory unlicensed item. The second piece was made to keep your cigs from getting crushed. There is a 1951 schedule on the back.

Here's a coffee percolator presented to Ira Blue when the Giants arrived in SF. My buddy has one presented to Eddie Murphy (presumably, not that Eddie Murphy). Also shown is a coffee decanter. Here's the lowdown on Ira Blue:

Rob,

Thanks for sharing! You pretty much know that someone has to have great odd-ball items when they have (no cards) in their signature.

Love the items!

The Ryan tag is really a neat piece; I've never seen this particular tag before. I really like seeing these items, cards included, that I have never seen before.

Also, the Bol card is very unusual. The whole aesthetics of the piece are very peculiar...and cool.

I agree with all of this, especially re: the tag

No one has posted any oddball items in a while so I figured I'd post something other than a Brooks item. How bout a John (Boog) Powell scrapbook cutout from 1961.

Hey Mark:

No one guessed what your Brooksie and Boyer item was. Something to do with the gloves that were issued in 1964 after their MVP years? Store display or something??

Tell us. PLEASE.

Default Odd Ball

Jeff - those are some awesome items. Thanks so much for sharing. I'm not sure what my favorite item would be, but really like that Nellie Fox memo book and the Mays Gould card. Of course the Gamble brings back fond memories of back in the day.

So, who's in the tattoo?

Also, looking at your stuff and the cool looking room in the background makes we want to sit and watch a movie in the room eating popcorn out of the Cardinals holder or is that a megaphone (or both?!?)

Bob F. - what in the world is that Tom Terrific item? Very cool...but what is it?

I'm one that hasn't seen the Mandel set; so what is the story of these cards?

Bob E. - thanks for sharing the back; now that is funny...

Todd - never seen the blue chip card as well. Is it cut from a sheet, or what's the deal on these?

Fred,

When I purchased this item originally I thought it was a chip bag holder since it has a clip on the back of the item and figured it celebrated the '64 MVP for both players (which the second part I'm sure is correct). Anyway, a while back I was organizing some of my junk (collection) an ran across an item I've had forever which is a '65 Rawlings Sporting Good Fair piece w/Brooks and Ken pictured. Well, as I was looking at the photo I noticed on both of their suits/blazer/sport coat (one of those three; I don't know the difference ) I noticed this piece was clipped to both of the pockets of Brooks and Ken. On the Boyer you can see it clearly and on Brooks you can see it from a side point of view; so it's definitely that item. Sorry that the picture is not that great, but had it on my phone to show another Brooksie collector (not really about the clip). So, the piece is a Rawlings sponsored piece made likely in '65 celebrating their MVP season.

Anyway, they may have been a giveaway at this event or possibly just worn by the two players. I'd think there were more made than just for the players, but who knows.

Default Blue Chips

Bob and Mark -

While I don't know the entire story behind the 1989 Donruss Blue Chip set, it is my understanding that this was intended to be a Canadian release, using the same subjects as the American "Grand Slammers" subset. The Blue Chip set was never released, though a few cards (samples/promos?) leaked out. I saw this on eBay several years ago and as a McReynolds collector, jumped all over it (how could i not for $10?)

I'm not sure if these cards were hand cut from a sheet or not - though I do find it odd that the top of the card is trimmed. Usually I try to stay away from altered cards, but given the rarity of the item, it doesn't bother me that much. I have never seen another McReynolds Blue Chip card before.

Thanks,

Todd

Two sets are available--Donruss Blue Chip and Leaf Blue Chip. I've not noticed that either is rarer than the other--both are crazy scarce.

Todd,

Is the back of the card blank backed or is it a finished back? Like to view if it's finished. Yeah, I don't think you could have gone wrong w/the price.

Mark

Bob - thank you for posting those. Great cards. Maybe one of these days, I'll come across a non-trimmed McReynolds to replace mine. Haha

Mark - the back of the card is finished. ...looks like a normal card. I'll scan the back soon.

I was always puzzled why they didn't include Steve Trout, who was their second best starting pitcher that year. When I noticed that DaClyde mentioned that the Chicago Tribune Archives were now online, I figured I would try to find out exactly which days these were printed. I found the four sheets that I have which were printed on September 5, September 7, September 13, and September 19, but lo and behold, there was also a four card half sheet printed on October 2, which included Trout and three other Cubs. So now I have to search for those four along with the July 4, 1980 Chicago Tribune page with the Rick Reuschel/Britt Burns Scrapbook photos.
Luckily, I found the four I needed on a Buy-It-Now on eBay a couple of months ago. I still need the July 4, 1980 Chicago Tribune page with Rick Reuschel/Britt Burns.

Cliff,

Man, I love some newspaper cutouts. Those are awesome!

Just so funny to me that the papers give us the lines, or dots, etc. and we still could not cut straight back in the day. None of the newspaper cutouts I have are near straight.

I don't have any of the cutouts that are color, so that makes them even more interesting.

Thanks for sharing...

My understanding is this was a NY Daily News insert in 1955.

Always thought this card was neat, but I guess it's truly "pre-war".

Not just oddball but a riddle wrapped in an enigma inside a mystery!

What is it?

Bob - You have several items on my want list...do you have this, or something similar?

You know Brooks has to be in with the majority of my junk...

Thanks. I also picked up two others. The Williams is evidently also from 1955, and Brooksie is 1962.

Perhaps a New Yorker on N54 can shed light, but I gather these were inserts to the Sunday edition of the NY Daily News (aka the Sunday News?).

2/3 of the proof photos for a 1975 Hostess panel? Pretty cool...

Was the Indians player even in the '75 Hostess set? Looks like this is what it was going to be until I guess they changed it to Lee May and opted for a different alignment.

Are you sure 1962 on the Brooksie? I don't "think" they used the block lettering on the jersey until 1963, but I could be incorrect. Either way I think those are some "GREAT" pickups.
