My thought is it was only a matter of time before the nice Mantles started jumping given the activity in the rookie card market. Probably the same guy buying them all. Whether he just believed they were under valued, or the alleged buying group is about to pump up the Mantles and they're stocking up first (hi peter) could be up for debate. Either way I take it as a sign that Mantles will be going up soon.

still baffles me how someone was able to spot this!
great job. edit: im gonna go out on a limb and say they were all legit purchases though. and doubt it's a buying group. Last edited by begsu1013; 05-29-2016 at 10:59 PM. |

I already see the trickle down effect. Those mantle prices put guys like me out of the market for higher end holders so we downshift to nice midgrade cards. Or even lower grade cards. Prices on these have gone up. Someone posted an ask for a psa 6 Kaline RC in the $500 thread. Six months ago maybe. But most of the recent sales on that have been in the $600-$700 range. That's a substantial increase and the trend is up.

Mantle is the king of post war and I'm not surprised that many of his high grade cards in many of his years are being bought up.

mantle cards have always been popular and will remain in demand.
i personally don't think it's weird that someone bought up a bunch of nice ones and that there's absolutely no conspiracy here. and still not convinced of some buying group out there. the prices that have gone up are completely across the board, on every level and cover every faucet of the sports cards arena. not just ryan, rose, clemente, koufax, etc. it's bond/mcgwire tiff rcs, 86-90ish fleer basketball cards and boxes, key rcs and short prints, just about any centered card, cards that break the grade (leon's robinson, the 52 mays), football and hockey cards, don't know about much modern but from briefly pursuing those sections the same explosive growth is happening there as well. maybe people are noticing and crediting that it's a viable platform to park some money while having fun doing it. or maybe the hobby is simply just healthy. and of course if someone sells something and makes a bunch of extra $X....what's he probably gonna do w. a lot of that $X? hopefully save some of it but probably dump it right back into something else... |

yea, not too dialed in on modern/shiny stuff but have heard a ton of blurbs about the curry cards. maybe not so much on patches, but actual cards like refractors and chrome. even the base curry 10 shot up astronomically in a very short span of time and we aren't talking chrome or even shiny stuff. the base card.
i never saw how any of those patch cards seemed worth $4500 to begin w/ but to each their own. certainly cant knock what another collects. we all got our quirks. and key hockey and football cards have taken off. the gretzky/orr rcs and look at what the bradshaw 9 did this past weekend! completely shocked on that one. |

What is new here is the breadth of postwar cards it has affected. Not just the Mantle-Mays-Aaron but lots of other players. I'm chasing after hockey and basketball cards I want now because I have a feeling they won't be relatively cheap for much longer, percentage-wise.

I don't own any hockey cards, although I am getting one soon. Those are the only three I would be interested in. Awesome cards.
