The odd thing is the handle is pristine, but it shows signs of wear on the barrel...

I see no reason why that couldn't be a gamer.
BTW - my Malta book is completely falling apart!

So given the timeframe and the fact that it appears to have been GU by Pendleton and possibly Sanders, what is it worth?

I won't represent myself as a GU bat expert but I have bought 130+ Giants bats from the 1958-2000 era. From my experience (and I could be wrong), I think either a Pendleton gamer with "9" on the knob or a Sanders' gamer with "24" on the knob would be worth more than your "Pendleton issued; maybe used by Sanders bat." I'd say it's worth more than you paid. How much more, I couldn't say.

Yea, I actually didn't buy it. I'm a Tigers collector so I wanted to dig a little bit. Given I do collect hofers and it seems plausible that Sanders used it, I will probably get it. They have a sale tomorrow so it will be $31. They also had a Kevin Mitchell bat too. It was really odd, the antique store had no sports items aside from these two GU bats.

Deion also used model R161 so that is a plus. Worth more than 35 bucks especially to Braves collectors. I wouldn't mind it either. Id pick it up

So how would a listing for this look. Possible Sanders GU, Pendleton Team Issued bat?
