Vg+ 71 Topps Set value?
Good morning, I'm Inquiring what are some thoughts as to the value of a raw 71 Topps set in overall vg-vg+ condition.
Thanks in advance :-) |

Would be best not to break that one up....depending on the visual appeal and how many other similar conditioned 71 sets are currently available, $300-400 would be most likely by auction. With the very best scenario of high visual appeal and minimal competition, you might hit $500.

I go 500 to 750... Especially if high numbers are not to beat up

Thanks for everyone help :-). It's hard to explain the true value to a long time collector looking to sell. He thinks the set is worh $900 ugh I didn't think that was right.

Here is a 71 set averaging VG shape with nice visual appeal, recently sold for just shy of $500 with PWCC.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1971-Topps-L...p2047675.l2557 Others 71 sets in the vg-ex to ex range recently sold in the $500-600 range. One Vg set sold for $600+ as a BO.....using best offer may be your best option for the highest price realized Over the past few years, I have won via auction several 71 sets with less visual appeal than this one for under $400. I agree, many card owners tend to over value/over grade their cards. At $900, a VG 71 set would be a museum piece. |

Seen a couple of them sell on Ebay for between $300 and $400. I suppose it could go a little higher, just depends on the bidders.

Just a general observation here. The obvious problems with the '71 set are those deadly black borders. It makes the corner/side wear so obvious that it leaps right out at you, and it's impossible to ignore. Say you had a 1973 set, for instance, in the exact same condition as the 1971 set. It would appear to be in much better shape because a lot of the wear would sorta blend in. The '71 cards don't have that luxury.

Totally agree Elm!! Plus so many people have cards in that set with issues, meaning recolored, many times the owner doesn't even notice. I was able to score a 73 vg-vg+Ex set today at a good price, so that made me happy :-). Definitely a bigger fan of the 71 set, Munson, Clemente, Garvey, and Ryan are prob my top 4 of the set.

Seems like 1971 is one of those sets that has two different directions lately.....lower end sets dropping in price. Mid and higher end sets going up in price. There's a lot of sets like that out there but the 1971's, as mentioned, are SO condition sensitive. Fantastic set though and those high numbers are super tough too.
