I don't know the answer, for sure, but it seems a player would have to hold and swing the bat to have it made to his specs. So one of those template bats would be held by the player. That said, maybe there is some other process?

Typically lathe bats are copies (templates) that are turned using a player's game used bat that was returned to the factory and side written with grease pencil.
When the player requests bats of that same model, the lathe bat is used as a guide and new bats are turned off of those specifications.
